As only a few days ago, I noticed ads suddenly appearing in GMX.com (email), Facebook, Yahoo mail, and others. These never used to appear and suddenly started appearing on the same day. Did something change on the Net that rendered this plug-in useless now? Does it need an upgrade? Did web developers find a way to defeat it? What's going on?

You should update to the last chrome + last ABP.
Nobody will be able to help you with your outdated chrome / ABP
