Easylist blocks text ads

Post by thinboy00 »

I'm a user. I'm not a webmaster who uses ads (okay, I run a blog, but that's Wordpress.com's problem, and it has no ads IIRC). I noticed that after the unfortunate passing of Rick752, Ares2 started blocking text ads. I'm not okay with this since:
  1. Those ads never bothered me.
  2. Those ads are sometimes useful.
  3. AB(P) wasn't intended for this type of thing -- its purpose was always to block annoying ads.
  4. I personally have no problem with unobtrusive ads -- I want the ad industry to move in that direction, but if it can't move at all it'll just find something less filterable to do.
  5. If it wasn't for this change we wouldn't have had the silly NoScript issue (both sides behaved in less than ideal ways there).
I was wondering if there is a filter subcription of whitelist URLs that point to text ads (e.g. "@@example.com/textads/ad5.txt" or whatever, along with the needed rendering scripts to pull ad5.txt and load it onto the page). If not, now might be a great time to start one...

EasyList always blocked text ads. Easiest way to make sure ads are not blocked - subscribe to EasyList without element hiding (http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions). Then you can also whitelist individual ads without problems.
