ads getting through and white list in my subscription

Post by macuser2008 »

This may be a stupid question... but here goes.

I can't figure out why I'm getting some ads and how to make them go away.

I subscribed to the easy list
http://easylist.adblockplus.org/adblock_rick752.txt

and I'm still getting text ads. Now these I normally don't mind, but ever since Microsoft took over one of my favorite sites  and tinkered with the layout the stupid @#$%^! ads hang over the content and I can't see what I'm really looking for!

So I tried to set up my own filter for the ads http://*.doubleclick.net/* but it doesn't work. So I was scrolling down the filter list and saw something that says "whitelist". I think this means the sites are "protected" and can serve their content. Is that right?

Anyway, imagine my surprise when I see all kind of ad serving domains in the whitelist, including the dumb doubleclick.

Here's a few examples,
@@.doubleclick.net/ad/st.news/*null?|$other,object-subrequest
@@ads.1.msn/com/library/dap.js
@@adserver.yahoo.com/*=HEAD$

So.... is that why I can't get rid of these stupid text ads? If I delete the white list will it just come back?

thanks for you help.

Those are whitelisted for a reason, doubleclick for example is used as a video hosting server by many sites.

Throw us a link to the site if you want help with the text ads.

Text ads are killed with the more advances features in ABP: http://adblockplus.org/en/elemhidehelper

You cannot simply delete a part of Rick filterlist. But you can however deactivate filters you do not like: http://adblockplus.org/en/tips?tip=subs ... ove_filter
There will be consequences but it's your choice, don't come crying to Rick if you find out some videos streamings are not working :P

It's not the site that is protected, but just a certain type of address from the site. Chances are if you disable it, something on the site may not work (but not always). Normal ads are USUALLY not allowed unless they are part of a feature of the site served by an advertiser .... in most cases, that is either video or other multimedia-type galleries. Most EasyList whitelists are aimed directly at those.

Advertiser-served video is always a 'work in progress'. The whitelists really shouldn't affect much that is not necessary ... but they could. Yes, please send a link. Like Fan says, you can always disable all the green whitelisting rules by clicking off the bullets after them .... then you will find out.

Any rules that you disable in a subscription will stay disabled even after an update. So simply disable what you don't like. If you don't like the whitelists, just turn them off.

Thank you for the help.

The site is http://farecaster.com (and it gets redirected to some microsoft site now but this is easier to remember :D)

You don't get the ads until you do a search then they appear in the right margin and spill over into the main (center) content area.

Kayak.com has the same kind of ads, but they don't spill into the content area and I don't mind their (Kayak's) inoffensive text ads.

Thanks for the info on turning off a filter. I never knew that was possible.

Seeing your are using the EasyList subscription and seem to hate the text ads and such, I just added a few additional things to the EasyElement subscription to help with those sites.

The EasyElement subscription is an EasyList supplemental subscription that gets rid of spaces and pages elements (like inline text ads and other oddball stuff). Simply follow the first link in my signature below and 'Add the EasyElement to ABP' (just click it ... OK ...done!)

Let me know how that goes.
