Update to Firefox 24 if you haven't yet, press Ctrl+Shift+J, clear the console, try a manual filter update, copy everything in the console and paste it here.

Found the answer, with thanks to the Adblock blog: Weird SSL Misconfigurations

Summary: Some SSL methods are disabled in your Firefox, so it can't talk to the secure download page.

Solution: In FF, Tools => Options => Advanced => Encryption

For some reason, I had "Use TLS 1.0" unchecked. Don't know why.

I checked "Use TLS 1.0", hit OK. It works.

You can check to see if you have the same issue. Open a new tab, and go to the Easylist update page: https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org

If you see Firefox error page, you need to check your enabled security things. The page will read something like this:
Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org.

Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s).

(Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap)
