Why not on addons.mozilla.org?

Post by Guest »

I wonder why this extension is not listed at the average user's MAIN extension ressource, addons.mozilla.org? Also, what is the difference to adblock (without the Plus) -- and why are there seemingly two seperate projects for this? For the end user, this is rather confusing ...

So does this mythical new version enable the whitelist? I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out why Adblock has never enabled the whitelist. Mainly because the filterset g blocks quite a few things unintentionally without it. Search either of the other two forums for my username or spreadfirefox. That's how I first noticed the issue, I couldn't see my spreadfirefox buttons on my blog.

Anyway, it annoys the piss out of me that this hasn't been fixed yet, the whitelist has been grayed out as long as I can remember (around 1.0.3 wasn't it?). This is the sort of thing that will send people scurrying back to internet explorer.

I think the best idea would be to integrate everything into the Adblock update, so that everyone gets it as an update. But barring that, if rue won't get on the ball, just submit adblock + as another extension. Something needs be done, one way or the other.

Yes, it's from mcm and it's not Adblock Plus. This is an update to the original Adblock which includes many bug fixes, Fx 1.5 compatibility, and more. This page explains the changes and contains a link to a version which is even newer than the one on AMO.

The download links for that are hoaky at best. Here's what I just posted in that thread:
Ditto, I can't seem to get a clean download.

I'm throwing my hands up in the air on this one. mcm_ham, you really should consider going over to adblock + and coordinating the codebases. This is getting rediculous. No really, absolutely rediculous. The novice users need a working update on the addons.mozilla.org site. If you can't get one posted because rue won't relinquish control, then the adblock + people should post adblock + as a new extension. At least then the project could move forward. It's not an optimal solution, but at least it would allow the project to move forward.

Shame on rue for letting things getting to this state. OBVIOUSLY the project is stagnating. He should either delegate authority to you, or he should gracefully shut down the project and give adblock + his blessing.

I'm not spending any more of my time trying to 'right a wrong' due to rue's incompetance. I've spent hours researching this and posting across five forums. Here, adblock +, filterset.g, spreadfirefox and mozillazine. I don't care how good a programmer rue is, as a project coordinator, he gets a D-. For my own part, I'm going to go do a manual install of Adblock +. Then I'm going to send a mass email to all of my clients, co-workers and friends telling them to do the same thing, and to pass on the info to everyone else they know who uses Firefox.

I suggest you do the same thing. The whole point of open source is to let as many people help build the code base as have an interest to do so. That can't happen right now, you're just spinning your wheels, try as you might. You sir, are to be commended and get an A+ for effort. :) Just don't let this project die due to rue's lack of helmsmanship.

I may be back to check for responses later, or I might not. It all depends on how disgusted I feel about the situation after I've cooled off. Whatever you decide on, best of luck. ..but make no mistake, you've got a decision to make.

Sad state of affairs

The adblock project is currently (and has been for some time) stagnating due to a lack of helmsmanship. It has problems with flash and other object types. It has no whitelist. Adblock WAS one of THE best extensions for Firefox, but currently it's a 3 star project at best. The community is trying desperately to put together updates and fix problems, but when the day is done, they're just spinning their wheels. As a general rule you should NEVER click a link you see in one of these 'rating' posts, you should scroll to the bottom and use the 'Homepage' link at the bottom to look for newer versions, or get more info. However, I have spent HOURS researching this situation, so I'm going to recommend that everyone uninstall adblock, then go to the following link and install adblock + until either someone breaths some new life into adblock, or adblock + publishes their own extension here. Well said. It amazes me anyone still uses AdBlock, and it causes dozens of problems with FX 1.5 on the mozilla forums - despite repeated suggestions like yours to move UP to AdBlock+. Your points can't be stressed enough!

I almost wish AdBlock Plus could be renamed to "BlokkEmAll" or "BlokkAdz" or something different and catchy - mcm's BRILLIANT fixing of a very broken and outdated and basically abandoned extension deserves its own moniker, IMHO. It is no longer "AdBlock," "PLUS" or anything elese -- it's mcm's own brilliant work at this point and he deserves his own "credit" for the many improvements, new features and most of all having it work with 1.5. Thank you Crogon/Happy Holidays/ p

One of the staff on AMO claimed that Rue is gonna hook with the adblock + crew to come up with a common code base. I do think that is the wisest thing, as the millions of peeps who already have adblock will automatically get the updates someday when they update their extensions.

It is just heresay, and if the status quo doesn't change, The Adblock + crew should DEFinitely submit their extension, one way or the other.

Sorry if I'm missing something, but was the question in the title actually answered? Why isn't adblock plus on addons? Is it because of the dev side, or the addons side?

It's because Rue told mozilla that he had a patched version of adblock (after being awol for a period of time). So rather than kill the project, they stamped the bug fixed. The reason i said mythical update, is because the update has YET to show up on AMO.

So, long story short, Rue is still in charge of the Adblock project, we will just have to wait and see if anything happens. That's why i said that if he's not working with the adblock + team (best bet, everyone that has adblock will get an extension update that includes codebase of adblock and adblcok +), they should just release the extension as a new extension.

I guess what I'm not understanding is why *both* can't be available, but if that's too much to get into, that's ok.

Also, there's another update? There's one from November...
