google non-intrusive

Post by timdgsr »

Let me start by saying I've used Adblock Plus for years, close to since inception. WIth the release of 2 and the added "allow some non-intrusive advertising" feature, I left it checked. For years this has been fine, but as of late, I'm noticing a slower and slower browsing experience.

Today, during some google and google map searches, I felt like I was on yellowpages.com, where the paid advertisements cover more screen than the search results. Map browsing was slowed a tremendous amount with the "blue" map locations that are ads related to your original search.

For the first time, I've gone in and disabled this feature. Once disabled, Google was crazy fast again.

My question is, what are the controls in place to prevent non-intrusive advertisers from modifying their advertisement methods once they've been added to the list?

I generally don't mind ads that aren't causing seizures and slowing down my browsing experience. But, it seems Google is doing a terrible job of keeping their ads fast. It seems the more logic they apply to generate targeted ads, the slower the experience becomes for us.

Is there anything to prevent the sins of one company on this list from ruining it for everyone playing by the rules?

We have a written agreement with each website on the whitelist which clearly tells them that if they replace existing acceptable ads with non-acceptable ones that they will be removed from the list.

Like with regular ad blocking we rely heavily on reports from the community to ensure that we detect non-compliant websites as fast as possible.

On Google's own websites ads are not blocked (= prevented from downloading) but only hidden (= made invisible) for technical reasons which means that they're just as slow/fast as without an adblocker.

The more help we get from the community the better the enforcement will be. :) You already help us a lot by reporting such violators.

I also just switched the "allow acceptable ads" option off after using Google Maps (the "new preview" version). I was searching for pizza places and after clicking on the location for "Little Caesars", I now see an ad for them underneath the search box. The ad covers part of the map and gets bigger/smaller depending on where your cursor is, so I would think that it violates the idea of non-intrusive ads.

I submitted an issue report for the problem (at least it seems like a problem to me) and then turned off the option to allow non-intrusive ads.

I still see, however, part of the ad. If I hover over the search box, I see a small box with the word "Ad" in it (with non-intrusive ads enabled the box would be bigger). If I move my cursor away the box stays the same size, but now includes the text for the ad: "Little Caesars (R) $5 Pizza [site URL]" (what I would see if I had non-intrusive ads enabled).
