Adblock Plus going wonky

Post by Bas »

Adblock Plus blocks too much, and I don't know how to stop that. As in, with it on, no flash from newgrounds plays, just because I'd blocked ads on newgrounds previously.

As a matter of fact, on many sites it doesn't allow flash to even show up. When I turn it off I can play them just fine, although on the few sites it does play them on, that tab thing never happens under flash, either.

Many sites I go to with it don't show pictures anymore.

Before you ask, no, the word ad isn't anywhere in the links to these pictures, or the flash files.

How do I fix this?

Sounds like a rough filter to me. Bring up the list of blockable items, that will show which filter(s) are blocking all the stuff you want showing. Then disable that(those) filter(s).
you can open the list of blockable items (press Ctrl-Shift-B or choose View / Sidebar / Adblock Plus: Blockable items in the menu) and look for an object there.
Checking which filter blocked an item

That got some of it, but again, why isn't flash on sites showing that adblock tab that the old adblock did?
Bas

uhhhh

That, an it still isn't allowing any flash to play on newgrounds.

Have you got javascript enabled? tools/options/content and make sure you enabled javascript.Or are you using something like Noscript to block javascript on some sites? Some firewalls and Anti-malware programs block javascript too.

This site is working for me after I allow javascript to run. I even tried the tab and it worked (after I allowed javascript to run).

As for not seeing the tab, under options show tabs on flash and java to change that setting. But if you don't have javascript allowed the tab will NOT show up.

Yup

Have you tried using a new profile and just install adblock plus to see if something is wrong with your Firefox? Or something else on your system (router, firewall) that could be causing it.
Bas

It ain't my firefox, it ain't my firewall

Yes, and it still does it.

Ok. Then either, your Firefox install is messed up (I doubt that). Or you have a router or firewall that's blocking things it shouldn't.

This is frustrating I know, but you are getting it narrowed down somewhat.

What version of Firefox are you using? (I should have ask this long ago)

This sounds like a filter problem to me. I checked all thru the site and with my 2 filters enabled, I had no problems loading the games that I tried. Only ads were supressed.

What filterset(s) are you using (or have you made your own)? Does it work ok if you disable your filters (click the bullet next to the filter name) and leave Adblock Plus enabled? If so, it is a filter problem .. not an Adblock Plus problem.

I don't think so Tim

I had no problems with adblock normal, ever on the site. I used the same filters then. I switch to adblock plus, suddenly tabs won't show on the site, and so forth.

That is very odd ... if you have your filters turned off and still aren't getting flash, maybe you should just reinstall the Mozilla Flash plugin and Shockwave programs ... couldn't hurt.

AFAIK, Adblock Plus will not block ANYTHING AT ALL without your filters enabled. Saying that "Adblock Plus blocks too much" just doesn't make any sense .... FILTERS "block too much" (not to say that in some weird instance it couldn't happen though).

Hopefully Wladimir will be back tomorrow and can shed some light on this one. Sorry I couldn't help.

ps: sites can change their structures too.

Ummm. I think you may be wrong here, Bas.

The games come from:
http://uploads.ungrounded.net/

if you have any of these filter strings
*ad*
*ads*
*ads.*

..... they will kill the games because they are ALL contained in the word "uploads."

Check your filters again

Well then, I made an exception for @@http://uploads.ungrounded.net/* and it fixed it. You might wanna put that in some sticky or some faq for help w/ newgrounds.

So, thanks for that. However, since flash 9 just came out, I still don't see the tabs that I can click to block individual things.

Your welcome, but ...
That site works just fine with AdblockPlus and my EasyList filterset without whitelisting the site. You need to tell the author of the filters that YOU are using about it. Whos filters are you using?

To see the SWF tab:
Adblock Plus options ..... check the "show tabs on flash and java" line.
