New Windows Live Mail doesn't work with Adblock Plus

Post by Sohil »

The new M6 (Milestone 6) doesn't work with Adblock Plus. I read this over the internet and seen it for myself and wondering what could be done. Also can anyone else confirm this for me.

Guest's post here has some relevant information on that:

hmm this is very strange.

if i try to sign into windows live mail with ablock enabled it gives me this message:

"Windows Live Mail was not able to complete this request. Microsoft may contact you about any issues you report."

and doesn't let me into my inbox.

but if i disable adblock plus and then sign in then it works normally (but shows huge ads)

so with adblock enabled the whole site just won't work? did microsoft just set the mail page to look for adblock or what is going on here?

As stated in the thread I linked it's because you are blocking:
http://rad.msn.com/ADSAdClient31.dll

The solution is to whitelist that and use element hiding to collapse it instead:

Code: Select all

msn.com#iframe(src*=ADSAdClient)
@@msn.com/ADSAdClient
It is quite likely that Microsoft tried to set it up so that the ads could not be removed.

Edit: changed filters

Works, Thanks.
But it still looks and acts crappy compared to Gmail. I guess I won't switch

its working ad-free for me. Although the spinner is spinning continuously. On the upside it's not generating much traffic.

Will you be less vague? I like the hotmail/yahoo drag email to folders power.

I meant that the interface was cluttered while Gmail offers more space. Live Mail isn't 100% Ajax, while Gmail is pretty AJAX. The preview pane is too small.

I too like the drag email to folders, I suggested this to Google several times via that contact form, sofar we haven't seen any implementation.

It just hit me, Gmail doesn't have Folders.

Sorry Google for suggesting it all those times.

@mcm:
I think being more specific is better here, just to make sure there are no false positives. Like:

Code: Select all

msn.com#iframe(src*=ADSAdClient)
@@msn.com/ADSAdClient

Agreed, this issue and the filters are specific to hotmail so making the filters more specific is probably a good idea.

I just helped Rick implement blocking for Windows Live Mail in Easylist without whitelisting anything.

All shameless advertising aside, you guys doing it this way will want to make sure you're also blocking global.msads.net/ads/ or you'll have ads downloading in the background, wasting your bandwidth.
