Element Hiding - how to disable?

Post by ohman »

Hello,

I just learned that Adblock Plus 0.5.x is old news, and latest is 0.7.
so i upgraded. glad that i did.

but i have a question:
How do i disable Element hiding? (old Adblock Plus had Disable DIV checking or something like that)
i believe it creates lots of problem.
I use Filterset.G Update with Adblock Plus 0.7
and sometimes on www.yahoo.com homepage, whole right column is gone for example. i believe culprit is element hiding but i did not see a way to just disable that.

thanks.

Element hiding is done by certain codes in your filters, if those codes are not used then element hiding is off (so to speak). There is no setting that shuts it off, it's just only used if you use the correct codes to make it work. Like #div(class*=adbanner)

More info here.

yes i have been there.
but as i said i am using Filterset.G, now i dont want to go and create my own list.
So i asked is there simply a way to disable this "feature". just like it was possible to disable "DIV blocking".
so is there currently a way? i guess not.
Can we have it? i sure hope that Wladimir Palant - the cool developer - adds it.

Just a thought, but have you considered using Rick's EasyList? http://mysite.verizon.net/rick752/firef ... r_list.htm
He has two lists, one for general adblocking and a second one for elements. I've used it for a while now and it has very good results without many false positives.

thanks.

i was already going the route of other filters, could not decide where to start.
going to give EasyList a try. it seemed too easy, so was afraid of false positive. will give it a run for few days. and when i am brave enough will add element list too.
do you use both or just EasyList?

my first check of the EasyList failed on my very first testcase of www.yahoo.com, not using element list.

culprit filter
*/a/1-/*

it blocks following on www.yahoo.com and whole right column is gone with it.
http://us.js2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/a/1- ... _eo_1.1.js

well i guess i have to go to EasyFilter list support forum.

 what could go wrong.. an item is blocked, no harm done.. or does abdlock .07 delete that item permanetly from the web? :o

Personally, I use both. But that's really a personal decision. The Element list targets blank spaces and text ads that the main list can't get to. Think of it a duster whereas the main list is like a vaccum.

P.S. Yahoo! loads fine for me. Do you have any other filters?

Believe me, I know how you feel.

ohman: I just realized the URL you gave. Yeah, Yahoo's been doing that a lot lately. Rick thinks they're "conterattacking", so to speak, us.

Well i guess i have to go to EasyFilter list support forum.
I went to www.yahoo.com and everything is fine there. No problems at all. Right column fine. I'm using both of my filters. We did have an issue with another yahoo page but that has been fixed. Are you using today's filter?

EDIT:
Did you clear all of you old filters before selecting a new subscription?
Installation instructions for ADP 0.7:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeoa83f/adbl ... k_plus.htm

EDIT2: Do you have other filters still running together with my subscription? */a/1-/* just blocks the ad in the right column ... everthing else is still there.

Also, look in ADP options ... turn off "check banner links". Shouldn't use it.

thanks rick.

yes problem is fixed for now, as currently yahoo is not delivering that problemetic .js link.

but to answer your question.
i had uninstalled old Adblock Plus and FilterSet.G Updater before installing ADP 0.7. i had removed all other old filters too. then subscribed to your list.
i also have "Show tabs on Flash and Java" disabled.

for now it is working fine. i will turn off "Check banner links".
