End-of-life for Firefox 1.0 and Mozilla 1.7

I noticed that MoCo announced end-of-life for Firefox 1.0.x and Mozilla Suite 1.7.x. Firefox 1.0.8 will be the last release on this branch, all users are adviced to upgrade to Firefox 1.5 or SeaMonkey 1.0. For Adblock Plus this means that support for Firefox 1.0.x and Mozilla Suite 1.7.x can be dropped - it will considerably simplify some parts of the extension (not to mention testing). So expect Adblock Plus to become incompatible with Gecko 1.7 in one-two months.

this doesn't mean the end of firefox and mozilla 1.0.x, it means mozilla will no longer provide supprt, and updates.. being open source, i'm sure people will continue to use mozilla and firefox 1.0.x, and add their own patches and enhancements.

That's their (bad) choice. If Mozilla Copr doesn't support Firefox 1.0 any more, I don't need either.

I doubt it. Why would you bother with doing that when you can just upgrade to Firefox 1.5 or 2.0 or 3.0?

(Although Debian will probably backport security patches to 1.0.x. But they're crazy.

After chatting with a few Gecko developers I decided that Adblock Plus 0.7.1 (unlike Adblock Plus 0.7.0.1) will not support anything based on Gecko 1.7 any more. This includes Firefox 1.0, Mozilla Suite 1.7 and Netscape 8.1. While dropping support for Netscape entirely is regretable, I find it sad that AOL once again didn't show real dedication to this browser and failed to upgrade its core while having more than a year time. I think all Netscape users are best advised to switch over to Firefox or SeaMonkey.

Why can't I simply leave the things the way they are? Current Gecko versions are far superior to Gecko 1.7, above all in terms of security. Dropping support for Gecko 1.7 will remove lots of complexity from Adblock Plus, improve performance and reduce download size. And it will ensure that a mistake I make won't become a security hole for every Adblock Plus user.

SeaMonkey is based on Gecko 1.8 and is kept up to date - it will still be supported of course.

it's very similar to why i'm using adblock + 0.5.12 and not newer versions.. i stick to what works.. if mcm doesn't update i'll learn css.. javascript, and xml and update it for myself, theres numerous reasons why users still use firefox 1.0 for one thing their extensions will break in the new version, 2. it's like going from boiling hot water, to freezing water in an instance and theres numerous changes since 1.0 and you guessed if a developer wants to they can continue working on the 1.0 branch and keep 1.0 going for a while..

Well, I guess people who like to stick with "what works" don't have a problem using an outdated extension version. And they don't complain when they get a bloody nose.
