No longer blocks gmail ads?

Post by space »

About a month ago, ads in Gmail reappeared. Adblock Plus had successfully blocked them before, but it seems that Google has wised up. I've tried building my own filter, but I couldn't get anything to work.

I'm using Adblock Plus v1.2 on Firefox 3.6.3 with USA Easylist and no exceptions relevant to Google sites.

Thanks for any help.

I should mention: I also saw this thread, which recommends adding

Code: Select all

mail.google.com##.mv
to block the gmail ads.

That didn't work for me. Ads are still there. :?

I would recommend using mail.google.com##.mq. Alternatively, web clips may be disabled in the Gmail preferences.

I'm afraid that didn't work either. Webclips are already off.

Thanks, though.

EDIT: correction, I see that the above does work on the latest Gmail interface. It does not work on the older interface (https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1), which I'm still using because the new one slows down my browser too much.

I would therefore recommend the use of mail.google.com###fbw.

OK, after reading the Adblock Plus documentation and digging around through the gmail CSS using Firefox's Web Developer plugin -- an awesome tool, by the way -- I found a solution.

Add these two blocking rules:
mail.google.com###ra
mail.google.com###rb

That does it. :D

Incidentally, the rule mail.google.com##.oM that is included in the Easylist breaks some of the drop-down menus when using the older gmail UI. I disabled this rule.
