Easylist/easyprivacy: dutch filters any added value?
Hi, i''m from holland, i already use the easylist (combined version) and easyprivacy and i noticed there is also a dutch filter called nl block
http://www.verzijlbergh.com/adblock/nlblock.txt
but they are almost all english filters, so i'm asking is there any need for adding this list also to my adblock plus or isn't there.
Or is it maybe just adding trouble and lot of more false positives?
So is there any added value with easylist/easyprivacy?
thanks

I would definitely recommend not to use this list. The most important reasons are that it uses lots of regular expressions which will make ABP slower, it has too general whitelists which will allow ads/tracking on some sites and most rules are copied from other filterlists anyway, so you just get a lot of duplicates.
so what list should you advice to use in combination with easylist+easyprivacy?Ares2 wrote:I would definitely recommend not to use this list. The above link is a good place to start (dutchblock might be worthwhile
) but I would not recommend adding another general subscription
You could also try fanboy's Adult and Dimensions lists from:
http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/alpha/
They will work fine with your current lists.
There is always the Malware domains list too, be warned that it will cause your firefox to take longer to start and shutdown
Edit:
Not so sure about dutchblock

How does dutchblock compare to other filtersets?
dutchblock is an all-round filterset for all languages. Filterset G. isn't a match because it's outdated and not optimized (slower). However if you are using Easylist, don't expect much improvement.

has added value next to easylist/easyprivacy, i can understand what the adult list is for

but what;s the Dimensions for?
These lists are equivalent to EasyList:smartguard wrote:is there any need for those other filters on http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/alpha/
Code: Select all
Base List
Object Dimensions
Whitelist
International Sites
Element Blocking
Code: Select all
Stat/Tracking Blocking
Code: Select all
Adult/Dating Adservers
Privacy Blocking (block a special kind of spam links)
Some people like Hubird also use the dimension list which technically works fine in addition to EasyList too, but I personally think it shouldn't be needed as it doesn't have a special target like the adult list but rather attempts to block ads in general like EasyList does and therefore isn't really suitable as a supplement imo.

These two are not covered by my lists:Code: Select all
Stat/Tracking Blocking
So if you are already using EasyList, only the last 2 should be of interest.Code: Select all

and also Privacy Blocking which have actually added value
there are here http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions so many filters with actually little added value but maybe added problems or false-positives to easylist/easy privacy

Supplemental lists should always have a specific target audience. If they don't, then they can exist under exceptional circumstances such as being unoptimised, or being maintained by an independent author who only makes supplemental lists, or being prone to false positives or something else like that. If it has neither, then I don't see why they shouldn't be integrated into their intended general subscription.

Actually I think, you're being too considerate in the Easylist forum threads. No list or supplement list should have the right to take patent on a blocking method (this is essentially what is happening here), you're going out of your way to make the dimension list compatible imho. I hope it doesn't hold you back, as I'm sure you know, there's a lot of people out there who has only Easylist subscriptedAres2 wrote:Some people like Hubird also use the dimension list which technically works fine in addition to EasyList too, but I personally think it shouldn't be needed as it doesn't have a special target like the adult list

Value depends on the intended target audience, it's a big and diverse collection intended for many different kinds of people with different needs. Not everything needs to work well with Easylist, since there are also people who do not use Easylist, so that collection of lists definitely has valuesmartguard21 wrote:http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions

ABP video download trick / Want to help? Test new builds/report bugs you find.
A lot of ads contain dimensions in the name for example this ad from the Australian yahoo pagesmartguard21 wrote:ok thanks so adding fanboys Adult and Dimensions

The filter
*_148x154*
From fanboy's dimensions list blocks it.
Up until recently EasyList did not contain any rules like this but since Ares2 took over EasyList he has been adding similar rules. Fanboy's dimensions list has the advantage that it has a huge head start.

Don't worry, it doesn't hold me back. With minimal extra-effort I can make some more people happy while there isn't a difference for EasyList-only users. Sounds like a good deal to me.Adblock Plus Fan wrote:you're going out of your way to make the dimension list compatible imho. @Hubird: But you forgot to add that EasyList already blocks/hides 90% of those ads with general non-dimension rules.

And you can't really compare the dimension filters in EasyList with fanboy's. I only block common ad-dimensions, fanboy blocks every dimension, so it will always be the bigger list. But I seriously doubt that *_148x154* and similar random dimensions block that many ads.

@Ares2

I have suggested quite a few rules to Fanboy for addition to his dimension list and as you know I have been a long time EasyList user.
My example was only meant to give the original poster some insight into how dimension based rules work. I was not posting an unblocked ad...And if given the option of an easy block I will take it every time, hidden or notLike your example is also already hidden (rule added long time ago).
