What about ads poping up in a new window ?

Post by GHOST »

(using firefox 3.0.10)

Hello everyone :D i have a little question for you all:

Does Adblock Plus prevents ads to pop up each time i visit particular web pages?

Because even with the following subscriptions :

AdblockRules
Filter Von Evil
Cedric Liste
Hackrus(general,supplemental and anti counter)

I still get some pop up ads. Therefore I tried to subscribe to EasyList but it makes firefox acts sluggish even with the safe mode and doesnt stop those windows(i hope Firefox 3.5 will correct this with the new javascipt engine, indeed pages seems to load faster at each updates =)

The only way i found to stop those pop ups was to edit an entry in "about:config" which was "Dom.popup maximum". I lowered the value to "1" and now the problem seems to go on (maybe i should put "0" instead?)

Thank you for any feedback about this issue 8)

Well even with those values (o or 1) in "dom_popup_mamixum" i still get windows poping up :S

Here is the website (french blogspot) where i get a pop up when i try to leave a comment:

http://lafanclubsaison2.blogspot.com/

However you need to try each comment links since some of them doesn't deliver ads

Thus i whould like to know what value i should put to "dom_popup_mamixum" to stop those pop ups...

Adblock Plus is not a pop-up blocker. Occasionally it can block the script that would open the pop-up - but usually you need GreaseMonkey scripts to "fix" the problem. Have a look on http://userscripts.org/, maybe this script is already there.

Thanks for the information about the script issue

Its indeed a script which trigger the pop up since when i use noscript it doesn't appear...

Then i think ill search for a good pop up block extension :P

By the way, did anyone successfully get rid of those ads by tweaking "about:config" or the value described in my previous post ?

If not ill consider this topic solved

Cheer :)

No, that's not what these prefs are for. If a site is "allowed" to open a pop-up (especially if the user clicked a link), there is currently no mechanism in Firefox that can prevent it.

Hey there

I finally found an extension that allowed me to block those pop up without disabling the "mouse click feature" in javascript !

It's called "Yes Popups" and its work fine with adblock for now on.I tried different rogue sites and popuptest.com that delivers pop up ads and all are gone :)

However i didn't tweak any options since it works fine by default.

See ya
