blocked list erased? and flash questions

Post by Lilly »

I restarted Firefox when I woke up, version 1.5.0.12, and all my filters were gone. Which will prove to ba a major pain, any idea why this happened?

Is there a way to just block anything flash unless you set an allow for a specific object? I only got ad bloker because flash is evil since it basically kills old computers, and with dail-up they quickly become the root of all evil.

Here is a thread about that: http://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1755
Some people have this problem, but for now, there is no solution.

You can try Flashblock.

PS: Do you really want to use Firefox 1.5 or did you just forget to update, current version is Firefox 2.0.0.12.

I don't like Firefox 2. I don't like where the x 's are, lack of 'load only images from originating site' option, and a few others.
The only things I like about it that this one doesn' have it the open the tab you just closed, and the resume session things. The first I would use only for my own carelessness, the second is if my computer isn't running right and I'm ignoring the problem.

But FF 1.5 is no longer supported by Mozilla. You won't get any security updates for it.

For the x's (close buttons) see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.tabs.closeButtons

I copied this from the ABP installation page

http://adblockplus.org/en/installation

Note: It is recommended to use at least Firefox 2.0, Thunderbird 2.0, SeaMonkey 1.1 or Songbird 0.2. Older versions receive less testing and support for them is likely to be dropped in a few months.

also

Firefox 2.0.0.4 and higher support "additional blocking features".

It is highly recommended that you update, Firefox 3 will be out before too long and you will be really left behind then.

There is an extension which allows you to switch between this and other image loading modes quickly: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1672

(I didn't know this was a feature that was lost between 1.5->2.0 though)

As Ares2 said we still don't know why this happens. Thanks for helping by listing your media plugins.

There is only 1 thing I can think of. (mentioning it in case you didn't read the thread Ares2 linked)

As you can see, ABP can have up to 5 backups of your filters.
You could try to open the backups in a text editor and see if your filters are still there.
patterns.ini is the file where you would want your filters, just delete the current and rename the other files.

Look at the addressbar in my screenshot to get there.
\windows username\ and \firefox profile name\ will be different for your computer.

Why bother to waste 5 hours downloading a browser that I'd have to download an add-on, for hours, to just fix one one many problems if I'm fine with the browser I already have?

How do I backup filters?

Firefox is about 6mb and I believe ABP is under 1mb, are you still using a 28.8k dial up connection ? :D

You can export your filter list by going into the ABP preferences>filters>Export Filters

You do not care for security?

Yes, some days, and I don't find it funny. Other days it connects at 38.6K, the 40K and 44K connections are spazzy and less reliable but noticeably faster. (Or the 28.6 is noticably slower) The difference between the 38 and the 40s is minor, but I usually connect at 40 or 44, and then it will stop loading anything, and after a few reconnects it will start working again, often switching the connect speeds each reconnect.

That, and I think that speed which data flows is about half what XP says it connects at. When I download I'm lucky to hit 4.0k a sec. Oh, and if I exit the room, it loves to drop down below 1kps until I glance back in and glare/tap my monitor. Or move the mouse, it seems to like the mouse moving a lot randomly.

I'm on avast anti-virus because I can't get AVG anti to NOT finish downloading just because it took too long or some shit and then say it's corrupted because it's missing shit because it said finished just because the damn download was taking too long.

I also managed to corrupt a 4gb HD, which can't be easy since there's no room for viruses, and with 64mbs of RAM no computing power to run a trojan if it's doing anything else. only took 6 months to not just corrupt it, but have it spread so that I couldn't burn my files, or do much of anything else.

Now I use 3 2gb flash drive to hold everything, one copy on each.

Computers don't like me and I've reconized that. If my net is going but the page isn't I disconnect. I doubt anything but a tiny virus could get in, and if it does I've learned that if avast on acess turns itself off and can't turn on, that something is really wrong and I should fix it before it gets worse.

I'll care about security when I can download security. Until then, I play it safe, purge temp files, espessailly the hidden IE ones, occasionally remember to do scans, and back everything up every few weeks.

I suggest you give "Free Download Manager" a go.

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/index.htm

It is 1.95mb for the Lite version but once installed you will be able to resume your downloads and Free Download Manager is able to download files from several mirrors simultaneously which will speed things up a bit.
