Problem viewing Walmart

Post by mzkr04 »

I am having trouble viewing Walmart.com when Adblock plus is enable.

I am using XP SP2/FireFox 2.0.0.11/ Adblock plus 0.7.5.3 with filter - EasyElement+EasyList

22 out of 44 element is block by Adblock plus.

Any one has same issue/similar experience?

**EDITED***
Walmart seems to be displaying fine here with my 3 subscriptions. Only 2 of 50 blocked (one is a tracker from the ABP Tracking Filter subscription which I don't think you are using). The only ads that are blocked there are a "GasX" and "Allstate" ad down below .... these are actually REAL 'sponsored' ads and not part of the store ads at all. So my subscriptions seem to be working just fine there.

Either your subscriptions are out of date or you have other filters besides mine in ABP .... but those other 21 'blocked items' are not from me.

Note:
You should always just simply disable ABP when shopping online though. It's just common sense ... you ARE looking at ads

Most of images are block by Advertisement Filter - http://a248.e.akamai.net/*

The site display properly when Adblock plus is disable. It seems like

I have only one subscription filter (Beside in built Advertisement Filter)

Are you specifically devote different time for surfing and shopping? I use Adblock so that most obvious and nagging ads are blocked. I don't toggle Adblock. What is the point using add-on if you toggle for every page you open!!!!

Culprit Found....

Post by mzkr04 »

It seems like inbuilt Advertisement Filter is culprit.

I installed FF with Adblock plus on another PC. Adblock plus didn't installed Advertisement Filter (which I believe was removed in recent release of Adblock plus. I always upgraded). I added EE+EL subscription. I can able to view 'Walmart' without any problem.

I can't remove this 'Advertisement Filter'. I might need to uninstalled/Installed add-on.

Any filters under "Advertisement filters", "Element hiding rules", and "Exception rules" are YOURS and are not part of any subscriptions ... there are also NO filters supplied with ABP by default.

You must delete those strings themselves by right-clicking and DELETE. Once you delete all in "Advertisement filters" and hit APPLY they will be gone and the directory "Advertisement filters" will disappear.

Those rules are YOURS and must be deleted one by one. ... they are probably left over from a move from Adblock to Adblock Plus (and Filterset.g)?

**EDIT**
If you want to just start fresh with the ABP install, uninstall it, delete the folder "adblockplus" in your Firefox profile ... then re-install ABP again. All filters will be gone.

If you are using the EasyList & EasyElement, everything for ABP and those 2 subscriptions is here (left column):

Only two option Paste or 'Move group down'.

You might be right. It must be from adblock.

But can you explain why filter create such a problem with CSS/display of elements. I thought that add-on will only hide ads without affecting style sheet of the page.

(I added more to my above post)
You have to DELETE the actual rules CONTAINED IN that category (open it) ... you cannot delete the "Advertisement filters" category itself. Don't forget to hit APPLY after you do it. (or you can do per my edit above)

Ask the second question AFTER you clean up your filters first

... more:

Btw, I think you can remove ALL filters in ABP's Preferences under FILTERS ... "Remove all filters"

To answer your second question, ABP is a very powerful program and is capable of many things as far as hiding/allowing elements on a page but it is the FILTERING that makes it work. What a lot a users don't understand is that there are NO default filters that come with ABP.There are 'suggestions' on first install that are created and maintained by others like myself. If there is a category called "Advertisement filters", "Element hiding rules", or Exception rules" after you install ABP .... and you don't know what those rules are? ... you should delete them. Once those are deleted, that category name will disappear until YOU create a rule that fits one of those. It will then re-appear with your rule in the proper category. Some of these rules show up after an upgrade from Adblock to Adblock Plus. Any filters that were in the old Adblock are automatically put into those categories.

Everything works great or not-so-great depending on what/who's filters you have installed. Just one bad string can destroy many sites (like in your case).

Thanks Rick...

The culprit was css which was loaded from
'http://a248.e.akamai.net/f/248/16813/7d ... global.css'
and filter 'http://a248.e.akamai.net/*'

I added exception '@@*.css' which resolved the issue.

The add-on is exceptionally good.

Be careful. There are some ad types that are generated via stylesheets.

CSS can be used for certain popunders or popovers. I just grabbed one example ... don't know if it is the best one but it will give you the general idea:
