Block Ad

On the site http://www.fordmods.com/ there is an ad on the left hand side (and I think sometimes up the top of the page) from some company called "checkmystats" which I don't like the sound or look of !! Would be great if the authors of the popular filter subscriptions removed the ads from the site and made sure they were not doing any nasty tracking behaviour.

The ad is blocked on the offending site. You used the filter

I was wondering what happens now if someone using your subscription wanted to visit http://www.checkmystats.com.au, the whole page is pretty much blocked. Was this an oversight or what you consider an acceptable / unfortunate bi-product ?

I find it acceptable and not unfortunate, Hubird. If I ever want to actually use that site, I can whitelist it or temporarily allow ABP. After all, it is an Affiliate Marketing site. I don't think we should allow .doubleclick. either, even though they do have a home page. Make sense?

It is acceptable? ... yes! Is it unfortunate? ... no! Obviously there is a reason why that domain is being blocked in the first place. If you look at almost anyone's filtering, there are hundreds of sites that all fall into the same category. You can't write filtering to allow the site and block the undesirable code .. it would just be too difficult.

Once we deem a site to be a server of ONLY undesirable material, the whole domain is taken out. If it is found to have a small amount of redeeming value, the filter can be adjusted or a targeted whitelist can be made. If someone wants to visit the home page of a known ad server, they will have to disable ABP or whitelist it to see it. It's the way it has always been.

Funny this should pop up, I've had someone e-mailing me recently asking that I whitelist AdBrite, since my filters break their site (AdBrite's Homepage).

Ignoring the fact that people blocking ads should not be placing them this guy wants me to whitelist the site so that he can surf it and manage his ads for other sites.

So yes, it's intended, privacy and lack of advertising go hand in hand. Speaking of which list authors might want to add *?*[AQE]*$image to their block lists if they haven't already, it's popping up on a lot of sites to track referrals, system information etc.
