New flash ads on yahoo

Post by madash3ll »

There are new flash ads appearing on Yahoo that do not quite get filtered out by Adblock Plus. I just started seeing them a couple of days ago.

I have Flashblock installed, so it doesn't play anything, but the ad itself takes up a large space that way overhangs the top ad space. You can see it by a faint line around the edges of the div. I can see through it, but I can't click on anything underneath this empty ad space! That means I can't access my email without playing this thing, which makes me furious!

This comes up on both My Yahoo and on my Yahoo email page. This kind of nonsense is driving me away from Yahoo as an email service, if this is the kind of BS I'm going to find every time I go there.

I've just downloaded and installed the Select Element To Hide module, as well as Filterset.G, as well as updated Firefox to 2.0.0.4, but it's still happening. The Select Element tool will suppress it, but sometimes even when nothing is showing (like the faint outline of the div), something is still blocking that space. I have to repeatedly "select element to block" and select all the checkboxes available. I suspect it's partly because they keep generating different details in the originating URL of the ad.

The ad's URL is "resources.eyereturn.com". I've written to Yahoo to complain but based on past responsiveness to complaints about intrusive and buggy advertising, I don't expect anything will be done anytime soon (if at all).

I was wondering if Adblock or the filterset will be updated anytime soon to squelch these guys? I'll never understand why these guys figure that if they keep sticking enough ads in the way of those who clearly don't want to see them, it will somehow raise their revenue and all will be right with the world.

Thanks for any information, help or empathy about this. :?

I see no ads here, but there has been no updates to filterset G's list for a while and I use my own list :), so it is quite conceivable that yahoo have new adservers since the last update to G's list.

My suggestion, try an alternative more up to date list.

Thanks for replying, Fanboy. Where else would I find another list of ad servers to block?

These ad "shells" don't appear all the time, but are appearing at least half of the time, probably more. Maybe you were just lucky?

By the way, since I posted this bug in this forum, is that equivalent to reporting the bug to the Adblock folks? Or should I crosspost it into the General forum too? Or something else to be sure it receives attention?

@madash311: I think there is still some misunderstanding. The problem you have found does not come from any "bug" either in Adblock Plus or in the old Adblock; the ads appear because the filters you are using are not OK, or the filterset (subscription) you are using is not updated enough with regard to that website.

So:

* if you decide to go on with Filterset G, you should report this to Filterset G forum (but I do not know if it is still active).

* you can also try with a different filterset (but rememenber uninstalling Filterset G before, do not try to subscribe to a lot of sucribstions at the same time). You can find different subscriptions here, with some explanations and advice form ABP developer. Test some subscribtions of the list, and if none of them do the work, you can choose the one you prefer and email the author regarding this page (in the above mentioned address you can find their homepage addresses).

Thanks adum. I think we may be debating semantics about the word "bug." :)

I read the advice to not use Filterset G on the page that Fanboy gave the link for and uninstalled it. I have since installed the filter list from his site.

Thanks for the link to other lists. And thanks to everyone who contributes to this project! I never realised how complex it really is.

Oh, I did not want to argue about being a bug or not, but to distinguish problems coming either from the extension itself (Adblock Plus or Adblock) or from the filters being used (personal filters or subscriptions).

If your are using Easylist, I would also recommend you to try for a while its complementary subscritpiton Easyelement; it hides ads like Google ads, inserted in the html code. At the beginning I did not mind them, because they were not too much annoying, but more and more webmasters are inserting them in the middle of the texts or the columns, so I decided to use Easyelement and remove them.
