How different is FireFox to SeaMonkey adblock list???

Post by mdagli1 »

Is it just me or is some of the adblock filters blocking things in Firefox and not in SeaMonkey?

eg: http://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1169
I tried this particular website on sea monkey and the ad is still there.

I'm also constantly seeing ads randomly appear, then disappear, then appear again apon multiple refreshes of a webpage. Like yahoo e-mail and Gamespot.
Dispite constantly updating the adblock lists.

what's going on?

edit 1: Oh, and another ad that refuses to go away:
http://www.candystand.com/uk/play.do?id=18047
It appears just before the flash game.
PC: Windows XP pro

With recent versions of those browsers, there is no difference at all. This means FF 2.0.0.4 and
SM 1.1.2. Both contain Gecko 1.8.1.4 as rendering engine, which fixed two bugs preventing Adblock
Plus to filter content loaded by a plugin or via XMLHTTPRequest. This now works, you can see
those elements marked as type "other" in ABP's blockable elements list.

Then your SeaMonkey probably is an old one.

A lot of websites use cookies to mark you as "has seen ads, don't show him again this session",
or randomise shown ads. If now the filter list you are using only matches some of those random
ads, this will have the described effect.

That would be http://cdn.candystand.com/games_uk/stin ... oneway.swf
However, this is needed to load the game.

@mdagli1:

You need to install Seamonkey 1.1.2. As chewey says, version 1.1.1 will NOT remove the yahoo map ads but 1.1.2 will. It was a recently fixed bug in the Gecko engine that prevented the blocking of these .... thanks to the hard work our own Wladimir Palant :D

OK, done a complete reinstall of the browser and all of it's plug-ins, including all the ABP extensions.
(Check my sig)
Rebooted

The yahoo map ads are now gone BUT, the ads in my yahoo e-mail account remain as well as the Gamespot one.

(edit: btw, thanks for telling me about the update. I had no idea that it had been updated so resently. *resets home page accordingly*)

OK, so these ads that I keep seeing are rotate. They are blockable but aren't yet it in the filter.
I know how to identify them (the search for "frame" thing or just right clicking an ad).

Where does one post them for it to get put into the list for the next filter updates?

here is a few I've found:
http://video.flashtalking.com/
http://ds.serving-sys.com/
(I notice you added my view.atdmt.com one :o or rather .atdmt.com/ edit2: for some reason, it doesn't work all the time... :? edit3: NvM, I accidentally disabled it *doh*)

I really want to help out...

(PS: I found this adblock filter uploader seamonkey extension. Do I need to use that?)

edit: also, would it be possible to get my filters to auto update instead of having to manually update it?

The Frame search trick is only necessary for a minority of the flash ads. Usually you have access to a tab like this: http://adblockplus.org/images/78.png

You are at the right place :P
Alternatively you can go here: http://www.richsterling.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=62
Rick moved this filter into the ABP Tracking Filter: http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions
mdagli1 wrote:(PS: I found this adblock filter uploader seamonkey extension. Do I need to use that?)
You mean this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/4042
?
If you don't know what it does then you probably don't need it. It's for when you maintain several computers but you find it tedious to ad the same custom filters to each and every computer. Read more in the link.

They autoupdate by default unless you disabled that option when you install a list. Easylist updates every 5th day I think...(or maybe every 4th day I forgot)

Just so you know, posting your list of 3rdparty adservers like this won't do much good, you need to have evidence that a particular site is using video.flashtalking.com for example.

The filter for "serving-sys" is already in the tracking subscription. As Fan says, we need a page example for the other.

evidence?

Ok, how about a screen shot?
(Can't exactly give a direct link as you would sometimes need a user name and password to view a yahoo e-mail account page, for example.)

... uh, how does one attach images to posts?
(As in being lazy and not bothering to upload it to photo bucket and then linking it.)

It is not evidence we need. We need to see ad the structure within the page. Something else may be initiating it.

So a screen shot will do.
(as long as the url bar, that crtl-alt-b window showing the possible ad link and the actual ad is in it.)
Links are easy to do and I would mainly post them but it's of course the issue of having to have an login to see an ad.

So... you gona give me forum upload permission?

I researched Flashtalking though ... and for now, I have added it. Update the EasyList and try it now.

I would really like to see what script in the yahoo page initiates it though .... not so much what it actually is. That script could also serve another ad company through the same script. People complain because they block an ad only to find another one again from a different adserver in the same spot. The first-party scripting needs to be blocked in a lot of cases ... not just the ad. That's why we like to see the whole page. Not to worry though.

I can't give you upload permissions here. I have no power here :( ... besides, a screen shot would do no good.

I DO however have much power at the EasyList Forum:
http://www.richsterling.com/forum/index.php

... and uploading is allowed there :)

It is really best if you just give the link so the author can go in and see the website for himself. He might additionally experiment with element rules etc.
If the ad is shown only after login, for example in yahoo email then you just link to yahoo.com and tell him he needs to login and etc.

Of course you need to state which filter list you made these findings for. In my earlier reply I automatically assumed you addressed the Easylist. But each list has its hompage/forum listed here: http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions
Not all of them regularly post in this forum.

Pictures are optional, you only need them if you have trouble describing what is wrong, or if there is some dispute were you may see something the other guys claims he cannot see. Use free picture hosts like imageshack.us or photobucket.com.
