After updating to IE ABP 1.2, I can't open a number of pages that worked previously: I am immediately redirected to an "unable to open" page for the blocked site and cannot see the page(s) I want. This is happening with numerous sites and many different domains are being blocked.

Interestingly, I am having this problem on only one of 4 computers. I have 3 64-bit and 1 32-bit, all running Win7 Home and IE11. All are current wrt updates and all have IE configured identically. One 64-bit is experiencing blocking problems, all the others are behaving normally.

@gneuner2:
  • Could you please tell me some websites that don't work?
  • Could you please also tell me, which filter list you used? (Click the Adblock Plus icon, then chose "Settings", then the one in the dropdown)
  • Could you please tell me, whether "Allow some non-intrusive advertising" is enabled at this settings page?
  • Please tell me, whether the settings "Enable 64-bit mode for Enhanced Protected Mode" and "Enable Enhanced Protected Mode" in your Internet Explorer's Internet Settings, Advanced Tab, in the Security section are enabled.
@p_hill:
Hi,
Sorry for the delay in responding.

- Using "EasyList", allow non-intrusive is enabled. The "manage" lists normally are empty.

- "Protected Mode" is enabled ... I can't find any setting called "Enhanced Protected Mode" - 64-bit or no. Security and Privacy both are set to Medium-High and no physical location requests.

- I don't have a comprehensive list of sites that don't work - the computer that misbehaves is used mostly by someone else - but one easy site is xfinity.comcast.net. From my playing around it appears that any site which uses oascentral or scrippsnetworks is a problem. Disabling ABP on the blocked site does not help, you have to disable on the referencing site as well - but often the referencing site is a dynamic page with an impossibly long URL so, if you can't get to it, you can't tell ABP to ignore it.

I don't use tracking lists, but all the computers are running Avast Online Security and HTTPS Everywhere and all use the hosts file from http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm. (just noticed that the hosts file was updated, currently I have the one from July 8 ).

Yes the previous version 1.1 works fine. I've gone back to that until the problem is sorted.

For anyone interested:

I had the problem with ABP 1.2 erroneously blocking sites in IE11 - but on only 1 of 4 computers. After unsuccessfully trying many things and going blind comparing settings between the misbehaving machine and those that worked, I finally tried resetting IE itself. This lost all the settings and extensions, but once I put everything back, ABP worked flawlessly.

At least in my case, it appears that the problem was with IE and not ABP. I would suggest anyone having similar problems try resetting IE.

Sometimes IE is just too broken to be fixed with a reset alone.

At this point, I would try un-installing IE11.
Reboot.
Re-install IE11 from Microsoft Update.

Afaik IE is part of Windows 8 so can't uninstall completely. In any case am now using FireFox & another adblocker.

Windows 8 installs IE10 & IE11 was delivered with Windows 8.1.

Removing IE11 from Windows 8.1 is still easy.

Thanks but that means I'll have no version of IE on the Win 8.1 as that cannot use any older versions and am only using another browser due to my original ad blocker (admuncher) not being compatible with IE 11 yet but is with FF, the only viable solution to the problem is to return to abp ver 1.1.

Yeah, I agree. ABP ver 1.1 may be the better choice till some of the ver 1.2 bugs are fixed. I'm using 1.2 & have only noticed 1 bug that is not causing any problems for me.

No need to worry about removing IE11 from Win 8.1. It is just like uninstalling/reinstalling in previous windows versions. I guess Microsoft thinks providing a check box to tick is easier than having to manually find the right download.
To install a fresh IE11, simply access the same screen you used to remove IE11 and re-check the box to start the IE11 download/install.
