Subscription Whitelists Concern

Post by Muthafodder »

I noticed in the custom filter list that I'm subscribed to ads were allowed for several sites as whitelist permissions.
I'm all for the encouragement of proper ads...but this is Adblocker after all...the end user should determine what is to be whitelisted.

My concern is that after I've disabled these whitelists...that I didn't know were active in the first place...will they be enabled once again after the next auto-update.

This is concerning for me as it gives the appearance that the subscription providers may have contacted and 'encouraged' to add them to the whitelist...just reeks of corruption per se.

Also, it would be nice if users were notified when adding/updating a subscription, or upon first use of Adblock Plus which sites have been set as whitelist; as most users aren't going to delve into the depths of Adblock right away and will go about their business assuming that certain sites weren't allowed. It would also be nice for current users to see what has been allowed by the providers since the last update...going as far as providing a change log that is created on Adblock's end, not the provider.

The whitelists are not present to allow ads we deem acceptable, they are there to fix issues (eg: site layout broken or video wont play when the pre roll ad is blocked).

Any filters you disable will stay that way even after a subscription update (new or modified filters are a different story obviously).

I can confirm that the Gawker media whitelists are no longer necessary as I see no negative effects, added they've changed their layout.

If you let us know which subscription you are using, the white list that is no longer required and an example page I'm sure the author will take a look.
