BT Yahoo! Mail still displays ads after install EasyElement

Post by davemab »

Hello,
You kindly helped me remove large display adverts from BT Yahoo Mail by adding the EasyElement filter and it works great but I am still getting small icon picture / text ads displayed above my folders list.
I keep removing either the image or the link with Adblock but the text always remains.
The next day a new ad appears and I have to block that. Is there any way of blocking these annoying messages for ever?

The current ad which I have not blocked yet has a small icon with the text beside it 'England shirts for less'.

The address for the current image / icon is .....
http://eur.i1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/i/uk/sh/e/engla.jpg

The address for the link (text will always remain even if I block the link).......
This link address is so long!
http://uk.ard.yahoo.com/SIG=12pun8a8g/M ... .201276086.
202586288.200802822/D=ukmail/S=150508152:MNW/Y=UKIE/EXP=1160
050330/A=200536666/R=0/*http://shopping.yahoo.co.uk/ctl/do/s
earch?siteSearchQuery=england+football+shirt+kitbag&fromform
=true&x=34&y=6&partnerId=96907610

I have also tried wild card address filters but nothing seems to work.

Kind regards,
David

Davemab, please click Post Reply in the original discussion instead of clicking New Topic. You are cluttering the forum.

Stupid Head. Sorry that I am cluttering things up but I am new to forums and finding it a bit hard going when I do not get replies. I will leave things as they are for thetimebeing because I do not want to mess things up any more. Can you help anyway?

You're not getting any replies because you haven't indicated since your initial post whether Wladimir's suggetions have worked or not, and your post was written A MONTH AGO. You should have posted in the original discussion (http://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=756) if you wanted more replies.

I'm not going to write anymore until a moderator sorts it out. In the mean time, I'll help you through private messaging. :-)

Yahoo shows different ads depending on your country, so I'm simply guessing - you got this on the left side, above the list of folders. That's where Yahoo advertises his own services. This filter should help:

Code: Select all

mail.yahoo.com#div(nwad)
PS: davemab, I removed your second topic that contained basically the same question as this one. I'm not so religious about opening new topics but please use only one topic for each discussion.

Yahoo Mail ads above folders

Post by davemab »

Hello Wladimir,

Many thanks for solving this annoying problem with this simple string. It has cleared the text and images completely leaving more working space.

I wish these problems were easier for the none techy to get to grips with.

Kind regards,

David

Hi David:

You are right in "wishing" that it was easier. The fact of the matter is that it is not so easy.

The big sites want their ads to show .... and you don't! It's a constant battle on each side (that's why I update my filter almost every 24 hours) :)

It gets hard even for the "techies" ... we just do what we can TRY to do. Some of us work as hard as we can. I wish it was easier ... but sometimes it's just not.

Question for Rick. How are additions made to filter lists?

Post by davemab »

Hello Rick,

You say you update the subscriptions every 24 hours but what I do not understand is where the new filters come from for you to add.
In my case Wladimir wrote me a string to stop ads appearing above the folders list in BT Yahoo Mail ....
mail.yahoo.com#div(nwad) ......
but as I understand it from 'Frequently Asked Questions' this is a personal filter which I add to my list but does not get added to the main updates every 24 hours. Is this correct? Would you add it to a filter list if it was one that everybody would benefit from?
I have read about how filters are created in the documentation but much of this is very complex for the normal internet user. I am sure a good many people new to Adblock would be interested to know how the basic system works.

Finally, thanks everyone for helping through this problem with BT Yahoo Mail.

Kind regards,
David

David:

Most of the blocking discussions are done in MY forum at RichSterling.com .... a lot is done by a handful of "select" volunteers in a hidden part of my forum. A lot of filters are just done by myself through a lot of random global web surfing.

I have been meaning to write a "101" webpage for creating basic filter strings but just haven't gotten to it yet.

... and if you think that Wladimir's element block is a good one, I will add it to the element filter.

Element block - mail.yahoo.com#div(nwad)

Post by davemab »

Hello Rick,
The above block that Wladimir wrote is in my opinion excellent.
The images and text it stops are fairly small but strategically placed between the 'check mail' button and the email folders list below it on the left side of the screen. The ads take up valuable space and every time you refresh the check mail button a new ad appears. Absolutely marvellous to be without these ads.
I wish I could write these bits of string myself.
When / if you get around to a 101 webpage I guess it will help people like myself no end.
Thanks for the information on how new filters are established.
Kind regards,
David

Have you checked the documentation on creating filters? http://adblockplus.org/en/filters

It's good to know some HTML and CSS when you want to form filters like mail.yahoo.com#div(nwad). However, if you need point and click simplicity, I recommend trying RIP. It doesn't work as well as Adblock Plus, but it's dead simple to use. When the next version of Stylish is released, have a look at that too. The developer is considering adding RIP-style removing.

Writing filters

Post by davemab »

Stu,

Thanks for the information. I will have a look at that sometime. I have to say that I like the way Adblock is set up and performs though.

Kind regards,

David

Yahoo started using a javascript frame, obviously to prevent ad blocking. Maybe Rick is right and somebody there is reading our forums, so I won't post the solution here. Simply stay subscribed to EasyElement.

Blocking ads in the new Beta Yahoo mail (javascript frame)

Post by davemab »

Thanks Wladimir.
I had a feeling there was something more to this than usual. That's why I sent the private email.
I am not really any good at writing special codes but I did try writing one myself with the help of your website but it did not work. The ads on the right of the screen are still blocked, but to be honest its these new ads on the left which are a pain.
I will continue with the old Yahoo for the timebeing which works very well with your blocking codes. I will keep subscribed to EasyElement!
