Adblock Plus

I was wondering if anyone wouldn't mind helping me out again as I just can't seem to get a grip on using this program, mind you it's not for the lack of trying.

Strange thing, after adding a new filter, then "Xing" out of the filter rule page then hitting Ctrl+Shift+R to refresh the page I was viewing, the ad was still there and my newly added filter rule wasn't, what could be wrong?

Below is the source code which I'm trying to work on; IMO what I need to remove lies somewhere after:

This is the problem, after adding one or more filters you have to press "Apply" if you want the filter(s) to be saved without closing yet the preferences window - or "Save" if you want the filter(s) to be saved and closed the preferences window. If you close the window by clicking on "X" all the recent changes (filters) not previously saved will be lost.

And what exactly do you want to block/hide in the page; the standard ads (using standard filters) or special ads like Google adsense (using element hiding)?

Adum thanks for your reply. I can't believe I forgot to hit apply- you probably wouldn't believe it with that question but I'm normally not as daft as that!

as for which type of ad I'm trying to block my guess would be the latter i.e. the Google ad with the element hiding filter. I really don't have the right to be taking your time up with this but I do appreciate it.

I am not a expert in Element Hiding like other people here in this forum, but I think your case is simpler.
If I open the web page (http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/) the google ad javascript is blocked by one of Rick's Easylist Filters:

*google-analytics*

it is not necessary Element Hiding (even Rick has some filters for Google ads in his Easy Elements additional list, I also use this).

The other ads (in the homepage) can be blocked with this filter:
*dgmaustralia.com*

A pìece of advice: when requesting help is easier if you give the page url and point to the ad you are trying to block (i.e. the blue box at the bottom left corner or something similar) instead of showing the source code.

I see that one of the ads is: As adum states , it is much easier to give a page url because the source code can be a bit misleading and really doesn't tell the whole story because we can't really tell what is an ad and what isn't just by the code. We really need to physically SEE the page.

If you give me the page/site url, I will try to 'gut it' for you.

At a quick glance, it doesn't even really need any element-hiding.

ps: I don;t think that *.casalemedia.* is even necessary for that as it seems it's being served thru another service that I have in the list. That's why it's better to send a link.

as for any future posts I will absolutely quote the site's url and the annoying item's location within the site so readers of my post can find what I'm looking at easier.

Rick's filterset (EasyList) has been developed for US webpages. It is not only a question of language (apart from jokes about American, Australian or Brithish versions of English language) because I use his filterset for Spanish pages since a lot of times the ad URLs are in English. It is more related to the ad server/companies (and the URLs of their ads), which a lot of times are country-specific.

And I use this list for french pages too.

No offense meant at all, Palomarsun.

It is just that we do not normally look into Aussie sites for blocking. I am very happy that it does work this well with other countries' ads ... and also non-english ones too from the next couple of posts!

I ran across a bad false positive with a variance that used a "2" instead of a one before the ".207" ... unless this has changed.

Well, it wasn't when I added the "1" that day. All I know is that adding the *1* cured the problems (I should write this stuff down sometimes). The false-positive was something like "220.2o7.net". All of the ads have a "1" in the first group. I've used that *1* string for quite a while with no problems and no false-positives.

EDIT: The subdomain might be equally evil, but something would not work (probably the same problem as foxnews' video and 'doubleclick').
