ABPnot blocking many ads lately
For the last week or so, I have noticed an increasingly amount of ads everywhere, sites where I haven't seen ads in years like google and gmail, and others like Engadget and ArsTecnica are now all cluttered with ads. I'm using Firefox 3.6.13/Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu Canonical 1.0. I haven't made any changes to my system, except for regular Ubuntu updates (which could very well be the culprit). Has anyone noticed something similar?
Re: ABPnot blocking many ads lately
I don't encounter any adverts with EasyList nor, I suspect, would any appear with any reasonable filter subscription installed. Have you looked at the known issue "Adblock Plus doesn't block any ads" and been able to identify the cause of the problem?
Re: ABPnot blocking many ads lately
Just for clarity:
1. ABP does not block anything by itself, it needs "filter rules". Those rules can be loaded with one or more subscriptions or added manually as "custom filters". You can add a custom filter that disables ABP completely or some subscriptions rules. So this is the first thing to verify, if you have got some wrong custom filter.
2. Subscriptions usually mix both "blocking" rules and "element hiding" rules. The difference is blocking rules aim to not download embedded objects (like banners loaded from third party adservers) while element hiding rules aim to hide some HTML container included in the Web page like DIV, SPAN etc (typically text advertisement like stuff you see on GMail).
3. You can verify what is blocked and what is not by opening the "blockable items" panel from ABP icon.
