Blocking geolocation/tracking services?

Post by P. »

Hi,

I just noticed that geolocation services (like MapLoco) that you used to never see anywhere except on Myspace pages seem to be becoming more popular (and also more accurate).

I know this isn't really a big deal since your (or your proxy's) IP address is apparent from the webserver logs anyway but the fact that these services essentially use webbugs and can track you remains. It's obviously no problem to block these web bugs with Adblock Plus.

I was wondering what you guys thought? Is this something that should be included in, for example, the EasyPrivacy list or is it not worth bothering? Most of these services show the (approximate) location of the last 10 or so visitors but do not display any IP addresses or other information that could be used to identify an individual user (or at least not without any additional information). What these services do with the data they collect is obviously another question.

I think it is something that should be in EasyPrivacy. If you see something that isn't blocked - feel free to report it on http://forums.lanik.us/, I am almost sure it will be included in the list.
