Referrer popups

Post by Cordman »

I've been using Adblock plus with EasyElement & EasyList for quite awhile with great success. The problem that I'm experiencing now is on the nascar.com site. When I go there and click on about any link, I get an annoying referrer popup with this URL. http://www.nascar.com/promos/referfriend/ How can I block this popup? TIA

Ah, yes .. the infamous "Get Trackpass" popup that I also deal with all the time too.

I've tried a couple of times to find that, but I gave up and put on the live race stats instead :)

I'll take a look again soon ... couldn't really (easily) figure out how that was being implemented.

Thanks Rick! If you can't figure it out, I'm sure it can't be done. :(

It seems to be doing it through cookies on the server side. If I block cookies there it does not come up. Once I allow cookies, it happens.
I can't seem to find the 'trigger' for it (I know that there has to be one).

Anyone else care to give it a shot?

When you enter nascar.com the next link you click creates a separate window "trackpass" promo
popup.

I really hate to admit this but firefox suck at popup blocking.
Hey it's the truth... Once the devs or some extension author cares enough to create a simple **"#!¤%#!¤** popup blacklist extension, I'll take back my words.

until then: http://pop-up-killer.qarchive.org/software.html
(I've gotten so used to addons.mozilla.org having everthing, this brings back memories internet explorer  )

Huh. I disabled adblock plus and didn't even get any alerts about blocked popups.

But I also use an extension "configuration mania" and when I got it, I immediately went to security > javascript > popupwindows and disallowed every popup event type. I never have popup problems. I even get the popups I want.

But you know, even if I go into safemode with all prefs set to deafault, I don't have popup problems. I wonder what "adblock plus fan" is complaining about. Oh, what's that? you have a software you need to push? Oh, why you're nothing but a concern troll.

Thanks I'll try this out.

Hmm let's see, maybe.....juuuuuuust maybe it is something related to:

A simple popup blacklist could easily end these popups, but no we have too much pride in our intelligent popup blocker, spending years to try and fix javascript related issues, all the while, the user has to live with the popups.

I tried browsing that Nascar page at least 10 minutes, no popups. Instead I got messages from firefox 3 telling me popups was blocked, so it works :)

Alternatively if one doesn't want to install this extension;
go to about:config in the addressbar
search for the string dom.popup_allowed_events
right click it
modify
delete the whole string

Did that and it seems to work fine...
Thanks APF!

@Cordman: Now Firefox will block *anything* opening in a new window - e.g. if you click a link in this forum. You better go back to about:config, right-click the entry and choose "Reset".

@Adblock Plus Fan: I think you are giving a bad advise here.

yeah you're right.

well technically it was asdfasdf's advice...I merely tried out his suggestion.

@Cordman if you need to reset things back to the way they where, do as Wladimir wrote.

I realized this shortly after I modified that setting on another site when I clicked on a link. I've "reset" the entry and maybe I'll give "configuration mania" a try. Thanks again!

Errhm the configuration mania extension does the exact same thing to the exact same settings in about:config.
