Any reason why Google Analytics is not blocked by default ?

Post by Marc »

I added an entry to block http://www.google-analytics.com/ and it's working perfectly.

Is it not part of the standard list because it is not an Ad site ?

However, it often slows down Web access because of all the stuff it is doing in the background. It also leaks quite a bit of information and I consider it as malware, which is the reason why I think it should be part of the default ABP ruleset.

Any comments ?

What subscriptions are you using ?

I use Rick's three subscriptions from http://easylist.adblockplus.org/

The 3 lists target different types of ads and can be installed independently of each other.

Google analytics is blocked in the ABP Tracking Filter list by:

Code: Select all

.google-analytics.
Marc

I'm using "Liste FR+EasyList"

From the standard List set -> abp://subscribe/?location=http%3A%2F%2Feasylist.adblockplus.org%2Fliste_fr+easylist.txt&title=Liste%20FR%2BEasyList

What is the difference between the EasyList I'm using and the one(s) from Rick's site ? Shouldn't there only be one standard EasyList ? ie. Rick's EasyList1 = EasyList found in the default ABP lists ?

If you speak French then the list you are using in perfect for you, if not I would remove it and use the standard EasyList (no need for rules to hide ads on sites you are not going to visit because you can't understand the language !!).

EasyList targets only ads

EasyElement contains only element hiding rules (text ads and such)

There is also EasyList+EasyElement which as the name suggests is just a combination of the 2 lists I mentioned above. See http://forums.lanik.us/viewtopic.php?f= ... 6280#p6280 for what that is all about.

Then there are supplemental lists such as Liste FR for french sites and Corset for Korean sites. These are meant to be used in conjuction with EasyList.

Then there is the ABP Tracking Filter subscription.
For blocking major web tracking, market analysis, and web bugs that invade your privacy.
I highly recommend adding the ABP Tracking Filter List and EasyElement lists.

Thank you

Since I visit more English than French Web sites, but still visit sites in both languages, I installed the French List + Easy List in 1 package.

I will change my settings to use the 3 Easy Lists + French List only (not the bundled package) since the bundle does not seem to be as up-to-date as the standalone Easylist.

Thanks again

All bundled packages are updated automatically every hour - I don't know why you think it is not up to date...

As explained above - EasyList doesn't block Google Analytics. Tracking servers are blocked by the "ABP Tracking Filter" subscription.

Sorry, I misread your original post

I understood that all 3 lists had google-analytics included.

Only the ABP Tracking Filter contains tracking rules. The EasyList would contain some tracking rules by default if a tracking server and an ad server had the same blocking patterns.
