useless/tracking myspace clutter?

Post by ahoier »

If you peruse myspace (or have siblings who do....) you may seen some strange hostnames in the view source, or passed through your dns..

Well, maybe Easylist could block some of the crap embedded on these pages?

The whole thing is, I'm no javascript expert..hehe.

Anyways, here's some filters I've come up with...I don't know if they are of any real use...I probably should have commented what I was trying to block too...lol.

*-analytics.com/*
*/*-ads/*
*/1by1.gif
*/ad_*
*/ajrotator/*
*/banner.css
*/beacon.js?*
*/cron.php?rand=*
*/images/clear.gif
*/metrics/*
*/metrics/urchin.*
*/omniture/*
*/pages/scripts/*.js
*/popup.js
*/referral/Ads*
*/site-tracker.js
*/tracking/*
*/urchin*.js
*/urchin.js
*300x250*
*_beacon.*

*adster*
*banner12_120x600*
*banner12_468x60*
*counter*
*fastclick-top*
*omniture*
*omniture.xml
*webtrends*

.projectplaylist.com/valueclick*.html
http://*.googlesyndication.com/*
http://*.quantserve.com/*
http://*.sitemeter.com/js/*
http://anonymouse.org/ad2.html - adframe on anonymouse.org
http://as.cmpnet.com/*
http://banners.*
http://hit.*
http://i.cmpnet.com/cmpnet/blank.gif - 1x1 gif I think
http://lads.myspace.com/mini/start_* - lads.myspace.com serves useful stuff too, but I think this rule blocks the "junk"
http://mbox3.offermatica.com/*
http://nb.myspace.com/* - myspace related, 1x1pixel graphic included on the bottom of every myspace page....useless I think...
http://sdc.* - I think this was on the siteadvisor.com page...but I think it may be tracking related/useless...
http://stats.*
http://ths.news.com.au/HG?*
http://top.*.ru/*
http://track.*
http://tracking.*
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/* - something on Yahoo front page I think
http://www.cricbuzz.com/*
http://www.expressindia.com/banner/grfx/*
http://www.rssfwd.com/idlers/* (1x1pixel, tracking image contained in rssfwd e-mails)
http://www.siteadvisor.com/images/336x280Rope.swf
http://www.ttzmedia.com/affiliate/adgenmulti.php?*
https://wls.* (I think it's some form of tracking mechanism at cingular.com....)

Also, another question...is there any possible way of blocking all images/content (flash,java,whatever, but mostly images....) that are less than, say 10x10px? :) That could be very useful to block these tracking links and web beacons that services like yahoo.com use to track you across their network(s)...

I'm not sure but I'm guessing a lot of your suggestions would already be blocked with the easylist+easyelement and the ABP tracking filter subscriptions (some of them look familiar).
I spot the lazy

its better to avoid myspace

have you seen this:

(notice myspace prominence)

if you want a less eye gouging experience using myspace, a real feat, then you should also be using the Stylish extension and the GreaseMonkey extension (+ UserScripts.org)

AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY IS THE NOSCRIPT EXTENSION ... I know how you myspace people like all caps ;)

Thanks for the info ;)

I'll definately check those out.

I've gone and done some more filtering with div ids and div classes....and came up with:

myspace.com#div(id=topnav)
lifehacker.com#div(id=ad-728)
myspace.com#div(class=adcount4)
myspace.com#div(class=wrap)
myspace.com#div(id=ad-hdr)
myspace.com#div(id=channel_ad)
myspace.com#div(id=ctl00_cpMain_GoogleAd.Skin_CMS_ProfileHome_Gads)
myspace.com#div(id=gafc)
myspace.com#div(id=googlead)
myspace.com#div(id=googlebar)
myspace.com#div(id=marketingcontent)
myspace.com#div(id=splash_profile)
myspace.com#div(id=squareAd)
myspace.com#div(id=tkn_leaderboard)
myspace.com#div(id=tkn_medrec)
myspace.com#div(id=tkn_trackingpixel)

BUT, any ideas how to get rid of this huge white, err...blue space.. :P

And no, I dont fall into the typical 14-18 year old myspace-user category :)

Though, there are some kids in the house that will be using myspace on this computer ;)
