Adblock not blocking external links.

Post by jombo »

For some reason Adblock isn't blocking certain links.
Before I was just browsing, and all of a suddenly a new window opens and it is an eBay page for apple ipods. The weird thing is I didn't even search for that and I don't know how Adblock can block it since it isn't an ad. It just opens randomly, sometimes this other website www.videosz.com opens instead. Does anyone know how I can block these?

Sounds like you might have some adware there guy. If this is happening on random sites, it is not being served from those sites. Install anything new or clicked on some 'warning' about "fixing security" on a site lately?

Is the popup window a Firefox one or an IE one?

Yes, this really sounds like adware on your computer. Spybot Search&Destroy?

Yeah, I'm starting to think I do have adware, especially since WinFixer has been popping up a lot. I'm scanning my computer right now with AVG Anti-Virus.
The popups are Firefox ones btw.

WinFixer IS spyware/adware.

You've been exposed through IE.

If Firefox is your default browser they will be Firefox popups, and that has nothing to do with Firefox. The spyware/adware/malware will tell your OS to open a webpage and the OS will use the default browser. I'm only telling you this so you understand that doesn't mean you was infected through Firefox. And truthfully it wouldn't matter which browser was the default it would do the same. This is only to let you know. I'm not "coming to the rescue of Firefox" or anything.

Is it only Anti-Virus program.
If so, then scan with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 too.
AVG Anti-Spyware support forum is here:

Dogg, that is probably true is THIS case. But I've seen many adware programs that specifically trigger IE. Most every adware program I have removed for others triggers an IE popup even if Firefox is the default ... happens even when Firefox is open too.

But to reinforce what IceDogg has said, WinFixer was most likely to have been an IE exploit (per Wiki article), but is instructed to run the default browser as the viewer.

Yes, I already know that Winfixer is adware. I do not have Winfixer downloaded on my computer, what I meant is that the adware I have is giving me popups to it and other adware. Plus other random sites.

I downloaded Spybot - Search and Destroy, and thought I deleted all of the trojans and adware I have, but I still keep getting those popups.

You can try the info here:

A couple of different forums pointed to here:
http://www.spyware-removal-guideline.co ... er-removal

... do at your own risk as this seems to be a nasty trojan to remove (Vundo trojan).

ps: Ad-aware or Spybot will NOT remove this ... it is a bad one! :(

You can also try Windows Defender, Ad-Aware, and AVG. But be prepared to take more drastic steps to reclaim control of your computer if those don't work.
What, me worry?
