Problem with JamiePlucinski.com Filter

G'day,

I have never needed to post before, so I hope I have done so in the right place.

I have used AdBlockPlus and 4 filters for some time now and have found them very good until a recent update when I have struck the following problem site when using JamiePlucinski.com filter.

The site involved is one of my main suppliers and seems to be the only site that has this problem.

http://www.pluscorp.com.au/ContentMaste ... egoryID=53

(I have tried to contact JamiePlucinski.com several times over the last week or so, but most pages there are giving me errors.)

The problem is that the 'Price Inc' column in any page of the catalog is missing all the prices for every item.

I have done as was suggested to test the problem - disabled all other filters, with only JamiePlucinski.com filter enabled - this blocks any prices from being displayed and also enabled each other filter individually with the others disabled one at a time. It only happens when JamiePlucinski.com filter is enabled in subscriptions.

I have also removed all extra filter conditions I have added with the same results. After contacting the site involved (PlusCorp.Com.au) and their web master and discussing the problem several times, I received an email back basically saying they would look into it when they have time and have had no contact since.

Would some kind soul look into what extra conditions I have to add to/remove from the filter to be able to see the prices column.

The filters I currently use are : EasyList (USA), EasyElement_USA_rick752, JAB Creations and JamiePlucinski.com. - all set to automatically update.

I use WindowsXPPro, FireFox v2.0.0.1 and AdBlock Plus v0.7.2.4 - all the latest available at the current time.

Thank you very much for your time,

Disable the filter string:

Code: Select all

#td(class=v11)
... in his list by clicking the green bullet next to that string and hit APPLY. That one is the culprit.

His adblock website seems to be a bit screwed up at the moment. I do even know if he is a member of this forum ... is he?

Man there are some pretty scary generic element-hides in that list :?

@rick752

Thank you for the reply.

I have only been using this filter because it is on the AdBlockPlus list of recommended filters.

You mentioned there is some pretty scary stuff in the filter - I don't really know much about filters except they work or they don't.

So any comment on whether I should have this one enabled or just remove it completely. Are the 'blocks' that this filter uses not correct or are they dangerous?

I know it would be hard for you to comment publicly about an oppositions product, so would it be possible for you to PM me with your comments as I regard you as one of the experts on filters as recommended by many sites.

Thank you.

Well, to be honest, nothing is really 'dangerous'. It may just give you false-positives like the one you have.

That filter is an element-hide which is almost impossible for an average user to find if there is a problem because they don't show up in the blockable items list ... nor can they be whitelisted.

I have a handful generic element-hiding filters in mine, but all contain some form of the word "ad", "banner" or "sponsor" in them ... they are pretty self explanatory. But when you start blocking things like a class called "v11", it could mean anything ... and that could could easily have been chosen by another webmaster on another website for a totally different reason. Obviously, he didn't find that hide on the same site that you did.

Element hides are not like ads. One ad has ONE specific address .... element names can be used for many different parts of a page, and on many different sites for many different reasons. If you like using his subscription, you should at least tell him about that false positive.

ps: Actually I do not have a problem with an "opposing" product. Many of us work together in here. I have some of the other filter makers as members in MY forum. It's not like we are making money at this

And, remember, even ad, banner and sponsor yields false positives...
