Block an entire website
Block an entire website
Hi,
in many websites load foreign websites that make page loading slow and use our internet traffic. for example you can see this website :
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20539840/Untitled-1.gif
1- how we can block entire of a website in Adblock Plus ?
2- Adblock Plus can't add a feature like NoScript that show external websites -that load in a website- in a menu, and possibility to block it by just a click ? this is very useful for where that internet is slow and monthly traffic is expensive (for example in iran).

Unfortunately this does not work: I did putvinny86 wrote:en/filters#basic

Re: Block an entire website
Are you looking to block the whole of dropbox on 3 rd party sites ?
If so, then the below filter will work.
If so, then the below filter will work.
Code: Select all
||dropbox.com^$third-party
Re: Block an entire website
I think the OP wanted to block either Facebook or Google Analytics...

oh thought both the posters were same

Re: Block an entire website
I still can't see any difference, no matter if the above is in the filter or not.vinny86 wrote:Are you looking to block the whole of dropbox on 3 rd party sites ?

Re: Block an entire website
I think that wsb was trying to get that image blocked whenever he clicked the link to view it; ABP won't do that: ABP never blocks the first request from the address bar, only subsequent requests that may be sent to finish rendering the page.
(Even if it did, the $third-party option still would prevent the filter from being triggered, because that only works if the domain of requested URL is different from the one in the address bar.)
As an example, if you added the filter ||google.com^ to your custom filters, you could still go to google.com and even perform a search, but the site would look very plain, its advanced functionality (like Instant) would not work at all, and none of the images would load.
By comparison, if you had a line in Opera's urlfilter.ini like *.google.com/* then you wouldn't be able to go to Google at all in Opera; the difference was a design decision.
Now let's get back to what Saad was asking about; what sites did you want to block?
I see the following third-party domains, according to that NoScript screencap...
facebook.com
google.com
google-analytics.com
softpedia-static.com
googlesyndication.com
Now I would definitely not recommend blocking softpedia-static.com, or else softpedia itself wouldn't work; so-called "static" domains are used to allow resources not relying on cookies to be requested without cookies in the header, cutting down on bandwidth and speeding up the site, and most large sites use this technique.
I might recommend blocking googlesyndication.com or google-analytics.com, but the former is already blocked in EasyList, Fanboy Adblock, and Adversity, while the latter is blocked partially in Fanboy Tracking and Adversity (blocking Google Analytics introduces many false positives unless done gingerly, and I suspect the EasyPrivacy maintainers stopped bothering.)
Additionally, google.com and facebook.com are probably loaded to bring up the +1 button and Like button, respectively; these may be blocked by Adversity Antisocial or Fanboy's Annoyances.
What subscriptions are you already using?

i am using EasyList & Fanboy's List.
i blocked google-analytics.com & googlesyndication.com

Re: Block an entire website
You should use only one general-purpose list, because there is substantial overlap, leading to more false positives and much more resource usage for ABP (which may be why your browser appears to be slowing down) with little enhancement to blocking ability.Saad wrote:i am using EasyList & Fanboy's List.
One good idea may be to remove EasyList and replace Fanboy's List with Fanboy Ultimate, available here: http://www.fanboy.co.nz/filters.html

Re: Block an entire website
If what lewisje says is true, then my list must be a substantial overlapping and resource hogging mess.
I have been using: EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Malware Domains, Fanboy Ultimate Adblock, Adversity, Antisocial for a while now.

Re: Block an entire website
Before I learned what was up, I had used both EasyList and Fanboy Adblock, and all of the supplementary lists for both, and regularly got over a gig of memory usage and slow responsiveness; then I read the documentation on adblockplus.org and learned the error of my ways: en/getting_started#subscription

Any list in particular that you recommend? Besides Malware Domains, which has a completely different purpose, which ones should I keep?
You are right about the memory usage and slow responsiveness though. Takes a while to respond and average memory is at around 200-300 or 600 right now by maintaining 30 tabs.
