Is there anyway to block the ad in the background?

A query from the owners.

Why is the ad bothering you? Explain the issues, ads are important to any sites survival and adblocking - especially non-intrustive ads - not only effect the look and feel of a site but also hamper a sites progression.

"non-intrustive ads", apart from taking 1/3 of my screen with junk, what else would you expect?

Should read up on recent posts regarding adblock..

He must have seen these forums in his logs...

Perhaps more people should use some like RefControl to fake their referrer. It's not perfect and some sites require you to whitelist then but overall I think it is quite useful.

HubirdL Yes I did and surely that is a good thing, so I can understand our readers wants and needs. Without understanding it people and their thoughts I am not ensuring Dubcnn caters to peoples needs?? It should be seen as refreshing.

Fanboy: i appreciate what you are saying but the ad is no different that the background we have now the ad is gone, its just an image that happens to have a link when used as ad space. I am well aware of the spread and use of Adblock but ADs make money for us and ultimately keep us in business as the content we deliver is free and costly to keep online. Therefore ads are the lifeblood of the site, when people adblock you criple the potential of a site earning money or ensuring clicks to a client that will rebook again. Will adblock kill the large corporate sites, not at all, but they could severly impact independent outlets.

Dubcnn, this article by Mike Masnick is very interesting given your situation:
Mike Masnick wrote:Mike Markson recently wrote up a blog post for entrepreneurs, talking about how every entrepreneur needs to learn the lesson that, whatever doesn’t go right is your fault. It’s a tough lesson for people (especially entrepreneurs) to learn. If you can’t raise money, don’t blame the investors. You were the one who failed to convince them. If you can’t make sales, don’t blame the sales people. You either hired the wrong sales people or didn’t put together a compelling enough pitch or didn’t have a good enough product. It’s your responsibility as an entrepreneur to fix things.

Can you explain the technique for writing a line that blocks a background image? I'm trying to block this:

http://themes.googleusercontent.com/ima ... 4RHIFU4WH7

Notice it doesn't end in .jpg (or anything). In the "blockable items" menu, its type is listed as 'background'.

If I add a blocking rule that says http://themes.googleusercontent.com/image*, it won't work, despite the blocking rule being in effect and viewable in the "My Ad Blocking Rules".

Thanks.

Thanks for the link Michael. Interesting article but written from an angle clearly favouring how he/that site chooses to do things. I totally agree that ads should be there to serve and to fit in with the community not annoy/intrude or cause issues for the readers of any site - including dubcnn.com. We dont offer popups, we dont do under/overlay/obscuring content to deliver an ad we just use some selected industry standard spaces to drive ad space, revenue and ultimately to aid our readers to either

See a service
See an offer
Promote an album release
Promote an event we are co-sponsoring

All the ads are always linked to the genre/content of the site and therefore in our eyes we aim to add value to a visitor experience never to detract from content.

I having been running Dubcnn for 8 years now - its important to strike a balance and I appreciate for some readers we wont always achieve that but we will always try, I'm glad to have found this thread to get involved with a discussion which ultimately can only benefit the site.
