adblockplusie-1.6.exe is not a valid Win32 application (?)

Post by 9190 (2) »

Hello,
I have a problem with downloaded "adblockplusie-1.6.exe" file.

I downloaded it from this web page:
download
Link: Internet Explorer (https://eyeo.to/adblockplus/ie_install/)
I want to use it with Internet Explorer 11. Before I've never had this problem, using Adblock Plus with exactly the same version of Internet Explorer 11.
I just restored the system from the image. So, it's like new.

Problems with this downloaded "adblockplusie-1.6.exe" file:
• First of all, it doesn't have icon.
• Secondly, its size shows 0 Bytes.
• Thirdly, when I try to start it, there is a window with message that adblockplusie-1.6.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Maybe you know, what's happened?

P.S. The email "support@adblockplus.org" is not valid – another disappointment.

This has just happened from a recent Windows 10 update. I purchased 2 new Dell laptops and received them a week ago. Finished setting up the first one 4 days ago, Win10 Home, 64-bit, etc. Still use IE11 and Firefox for an alternate browser. Installed AdBlock Plus 1.6 no problem. Working ok in IE11, but Microsoft has recently figured out how to circumvent some of the ads that ABP used to block.

Started setting up 2nd laptop yesterday, identical to first laptop. Just went to install ABP in IE11, and it pops up a window "This app cannot run on this PC" "To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher." This was not happening 4 days ago, and I just did a bunch of updates on this new laptop. So, I tried installing an older version of ABP from a thumb drive, version 1.5. It installed no problem like it always does, but there are a lot of ads getting thru on the MSN homepage that are usually blocked. I then tried to update 1.5 to 1.6 by right clicking on the ABP icon, and it says "There was an error while checking for an update of AdBlock Plus. The error text was: ?1?"

This is all new ABP servers are up, as I just re-downloaded 1.6 again, but it won't install. It works in the most current version of Firefox, but Microsoft has definitely changed somethin in native Win-10 code, when using IE11.

All of my Win7 Pro machines are running ABP in IE11 just fine today, blocking everything, like they always do. All my Win10 Pro machines are running ABP in IE11 just fine today as well. They are either blocking new installs as of the past 3 days, and blocking any further use of the ABP update from the red icon on the status bar. Or maybe it's just on Win10 Home version.

CavemanTech, my configuration is Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit), Internet Explorer 11. So, this problem is not only on Windows 10 (x86 or x64).

As I wrote it above, I've never had problem with ABP on this configuration before.

So, in the end I downloaded "adblockplusie-1.6.exe" file from here:
https://www.softportal.com/getsoft-3110 ... lus-1.html
The downloading link is from this web page.

And it works great: installed without problems, works effectively, as before.

There are two links for downloading on that web page:
• From official web site (I tried it — the same problem)
• From SoftPortal servers (works great) — the link for downloading which I gave above is from this option.

So, I don't know what the problem with "adblockplusie-1.6.exe" file from official ABP website.

So you're ok with downloading ABP from an apparently Russian website? Just asking...seems risky to me.

Everything is good and normal, as before, when I used installer file from official ABP website.
I'm from Russia, and used that web site many times. No problem. Sure, I also scan all downloaded files with a special software for viruses, etc.

My attempt to send an Email to this address was unsuccessful. I've got immediate reply:

Mail failure
support@adblockplus.org
SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data:

My Email was with text, similar to my first message here. Plus two small png-screenshots, showing the problem. Ah… there also was zip-archive with that problem "adblockplusie-1.6.exe" file, which I downloaded many times from official ABP web site. Maybe that was the reason…

@9190

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! Are you using outlook by any chance? We did have some issues with receiving or responding to those mails in the past.

Thanks

No, I never used it. On a PC I always used Email directly from an Internet browser. Specifically, I sent you an email from the Chrome browser, the mail domain is @bk.ru (Mail.Ru). So I don't know what Google has to do with the automatic message I got.

Today I tried again to download "adblockplusie-1.6.exe" from the official ABP website
ru/internet-explorer
And this time everything is fine with the downloaded file. For interest, I compared the size of this file with the file that I downloaded earlier from that Russian website SoftPortal. And their size is completely identical (both 6263976 bytes), which confirms its authenticity and safety.
