Serious Issues with AdBlock Plus for IE

Post by wolfenstein »

I never had any issues with "Adblock Plus for Internet Explorer" until now.

I am running "Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with Service Pack 1" using Internet Explorer 11 with latest M$ Windows updates for it and logged in as 'administrator'. Also I have "Avast Free Antivirus" v10.0.2208 SP 1 and "ZoneAlarm Free Firewall" v13.3.209.000.

1. Pop up 'A new version of Adblock Plus is ready to be installed. Do you want to install it now?' v1.3 which fails.
2. Uninstall 'Adblock Plus for IE (32-bit & 64-bit)' version 0.99 fails due to 'update.msi' is missing. No file of that name exists on the computer. Is there 'Uninstall Utility' whereby when you cannot successfully remove it the standard way, it thoroughly cleans your PC of it including registry entries?
3. Downloaded 'Adblock Plus for IE' from Softpedia (adblockplusie-1.3.exe). Ran executable once but Setup runs twice doesn't detect the previous version. Begins Setup 'Adblock Plus for IE' reaches 100% after copying files then hangs and launches Setup 'Adblock Plus for IE (32-bit & 64-bit)'. Error messages: 'The installer has encountered unexpected error installing this package - 2909', '1: 1101 2:c:\config.msi\4c3a5.rbs 3: 3' and '1:1712'. Or 'Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one.'. Using 'Task Manager' to terminate the first Setup program causes the other to hang and vice versa. Neither complete after leaving it for ten or fifteen minutes and system is idle using no system resources. I disabled it within IE under 'Manage add-ons' and makes no difference.
4. 'System Restore' to the previous week before pop up appeared caused 'Adblock Plus for IE (32-bit & 64-bit) to disappear from 'Add/Remove Programs' list.

I noticed Internet Explorer is taking alot longer to start and sometimes becomes non-responsive.

Any suggestions to fix this is greatly appreciated, thank you.

try running this utility (Windows Installer CleanUp)
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/S ... lity.shtml

then again: uninstall ABP, install ABP 1.3

I encountered similar issues as the OP wrt Adblock Plus for IE 1.3, Win 7 SP1 (64 bit) & sparse browser IE 9 (64 bit) with no other ad-blocking plugin.

1) ABP 1.2 was oddly listed as v 99.9 in Windows' Installed Programs list & other uninstallers. And while using Revo Uninstaller's normal uninstall function, the error msg was that ABP 1.2 (=>"99.9") was missing its msi package.

2) I managed to uninstall ABP 1.2 using Revo's 'Forced Uninstall' function, but it required 2 separate runs of "Forced Uninstall' (by browsing to AdblockPlusEngine.exe & choosing not to use ABP's "built-in uninstaller"), followed by CCleaner & manual deletes (via Windows Explorer) of leftover folders & files.

3) Whilst running the ABP 1.3 installer, the setup process instantly opened 2 windows. The 1st windows window indicated that installation has ended, but the Finish/Done button is greyed out. The 2nd windows asked the user to proceed with the installation. Thinking that I might have accidentally clicked on the ABP installer file twice, I killed the installation process via Task Mgr. However, during my 2nd attempt, the ABP installer did exactly the same thing (ie. opens 2 windows). This time, I ignored the 1st window & proceeded to install ABP.

4) ABP 1.3's settings menu is largely unresponsive: none of the options can be viewed or saved. See screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/3KOAMdR.png

5) I uninstalled ABP 1.3 with Revo Uninstaller's normal uninstall function, cleaned up the leftovers, & reinstalled it. Upon being clicked, the ABP installer again opened 2 windows during installation — see (3). After reinstallation, ABP gives the same menu problems — see (4). I had also successfully tried registering AdblockPlus64.dll & AdblockPlus32.dll, but this does not resolve the aforementioned ABP problems.
