Abp not showing in IE8 status bar or blocking ads

Hi, I downloaded Adblock Plus for IE, but it does not show in the IE status bar, nor is it blocking any ads. It shows up as "enabled" in Tools > Manage Ad-ons.

I have tried closing down and restarting IE, hiding and showing the status bar, disabling then re-enabling the app in Manage Ad-ons, rebooting the computer, uninstalling and installing each release version of Adblock Plus for IE in turn, to no avail.

I am running IE8 on Windows XP SP3 and running Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection. Why isn't Adblock Plus for IE working on my computer? Thanks.

-remove all other addons (java included) and try again
-scan for adware / malware using malwarebytes antimalware:
