You can turn off this by clicking on Settings (the cog wheel) then Internet Options, click on the Security tab, then untick "Enable Protected Mode"

You can do that but it makes IE less safe since it goes back to 32-bit level security instead of using 64-bit level security which is only enabled with the Enhanced security which, by the way, will be the default for IE11 desktop in the final Windows 8.1 update.

Yes, we will. Enhanced Protected Mode support should land before Windows 8.1 and IE11 are released.
