[Invalid] general download failure

Post by chromium 18 »

chromium 18.0.1004.0 (Developer Build 117043 Windows)

Hi,

I am used to adblock+ on Firefox. I have recently installed the latest chromium version, and wanted to try the current beta version of adblock+ there as well. Installation report no error. But when examining the filter subscriptions, for each subscription, it says "Failed: download failure", no matter, which filter subscription I try. The same subscriptions work fine in Firefox. Am I doing something wrong?

I have read that there may be a download block active based on the User Agent. Am I getting these problems because I am using chromium instead of chrome? What would be a permitted user agent and/or how could I set the agent that is used by the extension? Is it the same user agent string used by the rest of the browser, i.e., should it be affected by a User Agent Switcher extension? I have tried this but had no luck with it so far.

I would be grateful for any suggestions / comments.

Best wishes,
David

Please try opening https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/easylist.txt directly in your browser - do you get an error message? It should be a text file starting with "[Adblock Plus 1.1]".

We are only preventing MSIE users from downloading because of issues with some unknown MSIE extension. Legitimate users should not have any problems downloading.

Dear Wladimir,

Thank you for the fast response!

I tried opening that URL, and got an "SSL Error",

"You attempted to reach easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org, but the server presented a certificate issued by an entity that is not trusted by your computer's operating system. This may mean that the server has generated its own security credentials, which Chromium cannot rely on for identity information, or an attacker may be trying to intercept your communications."

Could this be preventing the filter download?

Interestingly, I also get an SSL error when browsing this site, adblockplus.org.

https://www.google.com/ and other https sites, however, work fine.

I have also just rerun Windows Update to ensure I have a current certificate list -- no change.

Is this only a problem with chromium on Windows 7? Or am I the only person seeing this behaviour?

I'd be most grateful for any comments or advice.

Best wishes,
DAvid.

I'm afraid you are the only one with this issue, your certificate store somehow got misconfigured and StartCom certificates are not accepted. This is indeed preventing subscription downloads.

Chrome uses the certificate store of the operating system, you can open it in the options, "Under the Hood" - it has a "Manage certificates" button. The dialog opening on Windows has a "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" tab, in that list you should have StartCom. There is a button "Advanced" (I guess that's its English name) that shows you what this certificate is allowed to do - you should make sure that it is allowed to authentify servers. I guess that it is listed since you already installed a root certificate update.

Dear Wladimir,

Thank you for the pointer!

I discovered that "Disable automatic update of the root certificates" was apparently activated by a system utility. Unchecking this option solved the problem :-)

Many thanks,

Sounds like forum/viewtopic.php?p=93751#p93751

If that wasn't the case, you might file this issue at https://issues.adblockplus.org
