The solution is :

Task Manager - Process - Kill firefox.exe.

Perhaps this was meant as sarcasm, but in the event that it was presented as an actual solution: That is not a solution.

New in this forum, so let me first say hello to everybody!

Today I've also identified the activated Adblock Plus 2.4 as a condition for the Firefox 25.0 (and 25.0.1) restart problem. The problem is present on different Win7-Installations (32- and 64-Bit).

So I just
- deinstalled Adblock Plus -> Problem disappeared
- installed Adblock Edge -> what a surprise - the problem appeared again in exactly the same way.

I hope it's a helpful hint for you developers.

I had the same problem. I resolved this issue leaving the box to "Clear history when Firefox closes" checked, but clearing the "Settings" check-box for "Browsing & Download History". The other settings for clearing history upon Firefox closing do not appear to be problematic.

Hi there

recently on 6 different pc's we noticed that closing firefox or cyberfox, restarting for addon installs ect we kept getting firefox process is already running message and had to keep killing the task process manually now it did happen all the time but it has become more frequent.

This is happening on gecko version 25/25.0.1/26
Windows 7 home, pro, ultimate x64

we started general troubleshooting to try to narrow down the causes.

By disabling all addons
clean profiles
format and reinstall of operating systems.

Finally we narrowed it down to one extension they all had in common ABP

we are unsure as to why this issue occurs with your addon maybe a observer or function hangs during the shutdown process or something fails to unload causing the process to hang as a result of what ever the error is it give the above annoying issue of manually having to stop the firefox or cyberfox process.

This issue is not present in 24 or 27 so it could be a SDK library issue that was newly introduced or conflict with changes to firefox source.

I hope this helps and you are able to reproduce and find a resolution to it as for now we have had to disable ABP like many of others we recommended it to experiencing the same problem.

Device: Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Android 4.2.2.
Firefox 25.0.1 installed on 2013-11-19.
Problem: ABP blocks all content so any webpage is blank. This occurs with all features turned on on the first run page of ABP. Also seems to occur any time after this ABP first run page is set up. Hard to tell since FF stops working.

Would like to add that this pro lem occurred with latest Ff for Android update 25.0.1, but not on previous version 25.0.

I posted over in the mozillazine.org thread, but I still have this issue with Firefox needing to be terminated in the Task Manager despite another Firefox update to 25.0.1. I didn't have this issue prior to 25 and I been using Firefox and Adblock for years.

I don't ever use Private browsing but I do use the Adblock extension and I clear history upon exist. I could not really trace it to the Adblock extension as it appears any extension at all may triggers the issue but maybe I missed something. The hassle of a new profile and simply importing bookmarks didn't fix the issue. My Firefox is also set to open to about:blank.

It is specific to Adblock Plus and Firefox 25.x. The fanbois of each blame the other. All I know is, my ABP doesn't work. Someone should create a competitor.

(I actually had created a new topic with this problem as I didn't see this one here, so I'll repost in this thread:)

I had been having an issue in which closing Firefox (by clicking the X, or hitting File->Exit) leaves the application's process "firefox.exe" open indefinately, and requires manually ending the process in Task Manager before re-opening FF. It happened intermittently, on around 1 out of 3 runs of FF, on each of two computers. The issue did not occur when running with all add-ons disabled, so then I started singling them out one by one. I found that whenever ABP is disabled, the issue never occurs, but when it is enabled, the issue occurs with the frequency mentioned earlier. Each test of disabling/enabling the extension was for several days of browser usage at a time (about a week or so I think), so it's unlikely to be coincidence that the problem didn't occur when ABP was disabled. This is why I think it may be an issue with ABP on FF on a certain version. Details are as follows:

Time:
Began after updating to FF 25.0 on both machines. Still confirmed to occur up to Dec.20 (we enable ABP again from time to time to check if issue is gone, but it's still recurring predictably)

Platform and versions:
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit
Windows XP Professional SP3 32bit
Firefox v25.0, v25.1 (occurred during both versions on both comps)
ABP v2.4

Other active extensions in FF (each of these can be active while ABP is disabled, and the closing issue does not occur):
avast! Online Security
Flagfox
Flashblock
NoSquint
Personas Plus
Theme Font & Size Changer

Note: I have updated to FF 26.0 today, and I have not confirmed whether the issue still occurs on this version.

Update:
(forgot to give my settings)

ABP settings:
Last update received on Oct 31
Auto-update Default
Disable everywhere - off
Show tabs on Flash/Java - On
Hide placeholders on blocked elements - off
Count filter hits - On
Show in add-on bar - off

Allow non-intrusive advertising - on
4 default filter subsriptions are checked, 0 custom filters exist

FF settings:
(more than I'd like to type out, but noteworthy is "Always enable Private Browsing mode" is on)

As I cannot reproduce this issue with FF 28, i assume it might be fixed. If you encounter it again and can prove a relation to ABP (try to disable), please file a detailed issue at https://issues.adblockplus.org
