AllMusic site inaccessible to browsers using ad blockers.

Post by Patrick »

Oh, come on! You know if ads aren’t so ridiculously intrusive maybe we would not be using them. MOREOVER, Allmusic wants you to load a dodgy extension onto your browser as well, goodbye AMG. Parting is no sweet sorrow. [Anyway, back to the topic.] It looks like Allmusic website has started aggressively blocking users who are using AdBlock extension, by either forcing them to use a suspicious extension called "Support free content" or to continue without an AdBlock Plus. Not to mention that AllMusic is requesting from you to upgrade to Premium so you could be able to view their website if you are a member of it, I tried to visit their website via Incognito window where I do not have active AdBlock extension. It is a nightmare! Tons of pop-up ads are popping up, redirecting your page, forcing you to download a suspicious content on your computer. How are they expecting from me to view their website without getting tracking devices, spyware, malware, viruses and such on my computer? I find that stupid.

Are there any suggestions to prevent this?

I am not planning to put my computer and browser on the risk of getting these things, which it will cause more harm than support. AllMusic.com obviously does not understand that they are on this way digging their hole deeper.

Ad Blocker Detected
Dear AllMusic visitor.
It seems you are using an ad blocking application in your browser.
No one likes ads. We know that, but the revenue we earn by showing ads is used to fund this website and to create awesome content for you at no cost. Please help us keep our content free by either manually disabling your ad blocker and continuing to AllMusic or choosing the following option:[/i]

Thank you for the new filters, but at least under OS X Safari, they now break Allmusic.com.

While they block ads well, unhappily they do not allow music streaming from the site...arguably, the main reason to visit it.

Any hope of a new solution?

all the filters above are exceptions: don't block anything !

provide some specific link where you get the issue

(disable all other blocking extensions, keep only ABP)

Thanks! Hope it works, but the question is, how do I add them?

[EDIT]: I figured out how to use them by following the instructions in your signature, but no use, I still keep getting a notification that I must disable AdBlock Plus extension. I even tried to use inspect element, by pressing F12 keyboard button but no use, it looks like it automatically refreshes the page and returns an annoying pop-up notification back.

Thank you, mapx. I did further testing, and ABP is not the problem. Even with ABP uninstalled, nothing is streaming from Allmusic.

The site is infested with ads and trackers -- might just be time to say sayonara to it.

UPDATE: Fixed. One of my own custom filters was to blame.

That is an impossible one to defeat. I have tried blockis CSS and Java, and the adblocker is still detected. On a lot of sites, either blocking Java altogether, or blocking the Java applet that checks for an Adblocker will usually suffice. I found I can do that at the router level, on the Forbes website, and it works.

I have tried

Blocking all access to jquery.com (since many sites access adblock detection scripts from there)
blocking jquery at the keyword level
Blocking java altogether
Blocking CSS altogether

None of these work. Somehow they have come up with something that cannot be defeated. I am trying to get a company going, and it will be company policy to block a;ll ads, becuase of malware, and the fact that ads eat up bandwidth. Bandwidth costs money, and any company that blocks ads on their netwrorks, can save money on bandwidth costs.

Is there any way to get some kind of filter that will work in a router. One of the busineses I want to star is a filtered VPN service, so that people can bypass filtering in schools, libraries, offices, hotels, to bypass overzealous blocking, while still keeping things like porn, gambling, and the like, which is why I am trying to block as much adverts as possible. It is quite obvious that blocking the pagefair.com domain is not going to do it. I want a foolproof way to do this at the router level.

the filters above are still working, so, disable al other extensions, keep only ABP, disable your filters in router and test again.
