Firefox 2.0?
Hey there is Adblock compatible with the newest Firefox 2.0? I don't want to upgrade without being sure of that

I am using AddBlock Plus on Mac OS 10.4.8 and I have several annoying "bug-like" issues, so I would say this statement is untrue.burebista wrote:Confirm that. Everything is fine with 2.0 Final.Wladimir Palant wrote:As to Adblock Plus - yes, there are no known issues with Firefox 2.0.
For starters on *some* installations one gets a dialogue to subscribe to filter lists, on some you don't see it. *If* you see this message, and if you don't subscribe on this first opportunity (even though there is a message in the browser suggesting and immediate restart instead), you will never see the subscription list again. There is no combination of preferences or menu selections that can force the option to subscribe to lists that can be found.
Also if you don't like the button being on the tool bar, you can right-click it and select *not to have it appear there, but if you don't first select the "appear in the taskbar" option, the button is no longer available period since there is no way to get to it from preferences or any tool bar selection.
I am a new user, but it seems to me there is a bug that makes at least a part of the preferences panel not show up. That would explain both of these behaviors anyway.
Also the apple-shift-F thing to make the falsh overlays appear, which seems to be the only effective way to get the flash ads out of your face, does not work at all in my version.

Tools/adblock plus doesn't bring up prefs?? Then under options check by show in toolbar? I don't know Mac so I'm not sure on this, I just know it works in Windows.Jeremy wrote:if you don't first select the "appear in the taskbar" option, the button is no longer available period since there is no way to get to it from preferences or any tool bar selection.
Re: Not true
This one is a recurrent question. Both options are available in ABP preferences window, but when you open it (clicking the icon or with ABP menu item in Tools menu) in Mac (or at least in most Mac versions) the ABP preferences window menubar (Filters-Edit-Options-Help) appears on top of your screen:Jeremy wrote:I am using AddBlock Plus on Mac OS 10.4.8 and I have several annoying "bug-like" issues, so I would say this statement is untrue.burebista wrote:Confirm that. * choose Filters if you want to subscribe a filterset, or import/export filters
* choose Options in order to enable/disable toolbar/status bar icons.
Wladimir: Perhaps the explanation of this question should be included in the FAQ when you do not be so busy. With ABP in Top Ten (and shortly in Top Five, I am sure) there will be a lot of Mac users with the same doubt.
Re: Not true
The point of this dialog is to introduce subscriptions to new users. If a user already has a subscription the dialog won't appear. The text in the dialog also notes that you can add subscriptions from the preferences dialog later - if you don't choose to do it immediately.Jeremy wrote:For starters on *some* installations one gets a dialogue to subscribe to filter lists, on some you don't see it. *If* you see this message, and if you don't subscribe on this first opportunity (even though there is a message in the browser suggesting and immediate restart instead), you will never see the subscription list again. There is the Options menu in preferences.Jeremy wrote:Also if you don't like the button being on the tool bar, you can right-click it and select *not to have it appear there, but if you don't first select the "appear in the taskbar" option, the button is no longer available period since there is no way to get to it from preferences or any tool bar selection.
As a Mac user you probably know that you should look for the menu at the top of the screen and not in the dialog itself...Jeremy wrote:I am a new user, but it seems to me there is a bug that makes at least a part of the preferences panel not show up. There is no such option/shortcut key starting with Adblock Plus 0.6. Please see http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_basics#objects. While this way of blocking things has its issues (I am working on these) it certainly also has much fewer side-effects.Jeremy wrote:Also the apple-shift-F thing to make the falsh overlays appear, which seems to be the only effective way to get the flash ads out of your face, does not work at all in my version.
None of the issues you mentioned has anything to do with Firefox 2.0. So I would say the statement is still true.

but it looks like most mac users does not know this.Wladimir Palant wrote:As a Mac user you probably know that you should look for the menu at the top of the screen and not in the dialog itself...
whats the reason? stupid mac design, the habit from ex windows users or simply user ignorance?
i mean, he is not the first user with this problem and he will not be the last...
Re: Not true
Well I will answer this post since you succinctly describe the exact problem I was having, even though you chose to heap on a whole lot of unnecessary insults as well.steve wrote:but it looks like most mac users does not know this.Wladimir Palant wrote:As a Mac user you probably know that you should look for the menu at the top of the screen and not in the dialog itself...

Yes, when in preferences the menu at the top changes, and yes, I missed that.

This is not really default Mac behavior for an add-in or extension to a program, or even a program though. Only a full fledged stand alone program should really take over the menu bar in that way so I did not expect it. It also is different from the previous version of Adblock that I was using so I had no reason to suspect it would have changed in this version.
Even in a full-blown program, in Mac OS-X if you select the preferences, you get a dialogue box (often tabbed) that includes all the preferences. It is rare to non-existent that the menu bar would change in that way for preferences, especially the preferences of an add-in component of a larger program. Additionally, since I was in fact being presented with a dialogue box (the filter list), each time I selected preferences, I had no reason to inspect the menus.
So many thanks for all the other people who helped me to solve this problem, and a raspberry for you for the insulting remarks.

My recommendation to the program creator (if he is reading this), would be to either put the preferences into a dialogue as would be the typical behaviour, or to not show the filter dialogue box as its a bit of a misdirection.
@steve: I would like to know that myself. I guess that dialogs on Mac don't usually have a menu. I want to find Apple's user interface design guidelines again and check whether they have any recommendations on this. I also tried to put the menu back into the dialog but that got too hacky, guess I'm really not supposed to do this.
PS: Jeremy already said most of what I have here...
