How to diagnose problem scripts?

Post by Dylan »

So I have both AB+ and NoScript installed. I have allowed both BioWare.com and EA.com. When I visit the social.bioware.com forum one of my cores will usually experience 100% cpu load, but I'm not sure which script is causing this.

AB+ lists the following scripts as blockable elements:

http://resources.ea.com/omniture/omniture_wrapper.js
http://resources.ea.com/omniture/s_code_remote_v02.js
http://social.bioware.com/include/fcked ... keditor.js
http://social.bioware.com/include/js/class_forum.js
http://social.bioware.com/include/js/mo ... facebox.js
http://social.bioware.com/include/js/radcodes.js
http://social.bioware.com/packer.php?ty ... _select.js
http://social.bioware.com/misc_js.php
http://social.bioware.com/packer.php?ty ... eration.js

Is it possible for me to diagnose which script(s) is the problem? Maybe by installing some other Firefox extension?

The way that I usually identify problematic scripts is by trial and error, as well as a little experience. I would suggest that one of the following items is responsible for the issue.

Code: Select all

http://resources.ea.com/omniture/omniture_wrapper.js
http://resources.ea.com/omniture/s_code_remote_v02.js

I use K-Melon version 1.6.0 which has adblock built in. When I visit the site below it freezes the browser and it looks as if an incompatible script is the problem. I am not a software writer, but thought someone there may be interested in this glitch. It sounds a bit like the problem described here.

It's not. Just been hunting around for a solution to the problem I am getting with browser freeze-ups on some sites. Found this forum and thought someone might know the answer. I am getting annoyed at the sites being built by University trained web developers using scripts such as the crap in 'Front Page'. These University trained geeks assume everyone in the world is using the latest software. On my web sites I will not use even javascript so anyone can read it. Remove the links if you like.

Like I said no offense was meant. And the link is still there it's just not a direct link. I will leave these and let the developer or someone else decide on them, but to me they don't look like spam like the one I removed the direct link to did. Just got to remember we get creative spams here and that one looked like it was possible. But was unsure so I left the link, just not direct. I sure hope you can understand. The developer then can decide because it's still there.

I've had a look and can't find any scripts on the three linked homepages, either embedded or external. Furthermore, given that Adblock Plus does not even appear to be active on the websites, I am reasonably certain that advert blocking software is not the cause of the issue.

The Alliance for Natural Health website is more complicated, as it contains both scripts and items I would expect to be blocked, although I do not encounter any problems when using Firefox. I would therefore advise that you attempt to diagnose the causes of the issues on the other domains first, as resolving those problems may also permit anhcampaign.org to function correctly. Do other K-Meleon users experience issues on the domains?

P.S.
Which list of filters does K-Meleon use by default?

Sorry to cause confusion by adding my own sites. That was just to show that these complex scripts are not needed.
The Alliance for Natural Health was indeed the one I meant. Today I tried it again using K-Melon and got the same freeze-up with the error message "Script://flashblock/content/flashblock.xml:117"

I then tried again using Firefox (latest version) and that was OK. Seems to me though is these problems need not occur if developers stopped assuming everyone is using the latest software. I know this problem happened with other web sites, but can't recall which ones until hit them again.

I really appreciate your fast response on this.

The error message suggests that the FlashBlock extension is responsible, not Adblock Plus. Does disabling FlashBlock resolve the issue?

Sorry for delay replying I was away. Yes, I tried disabling the flashblock plugin, and any other related ones, but that makes no difference to the web site I mentioned. It still freezes my browser even after I tell it to stop the running script. I have informed them of this problem, but they seem to think they can only ask their web developers to have a site compatible with the latest browsers. It is a real shame as it is an important non commercial information site.

Thanks for the suggestions

Just asking here, did you try a fresh profile or removed flashblock completely? I ask because sometimes just disabling this or that doesn't fix it. I would try a fresh profile see if it hangs. Then if it doesn't try adding ABP (this add-on) alone and see how it works. See I haven't had any issues with any of these sites. I tried them all without problems.
