BBC media player and AdBlock Plus 0.7

Post by patfla »

Firefox 1.5.0.2.

Don't believe I had this problem with AdBlock+ 0.6. Go to news.bbc.co.uk; scroll down and on the right there are a bunch of Audio buttons. (next to, say, World Service Bulletin).

Click one. Window comes up; is empty; done.

Turn off AdBlock+ and it now works (the BBC media player appears in its full glory).

I looked some at the new pattern recognition stuff. I'm a programmer and know regexps but couldn't figure it out (although I didn't spend very long on it). How does one add an Exception rule in the Preferences window?

So what's needed (to get the BBC media player loading properly)?

Amusingly, when I set up the account just now so that I could post, the Confirmation Code graphic didn't appear until I'd turned off AdBlock+ and refreshed.

Perhaps you filterlist is a bit over-agressive?

I have no problems with Fx1.5.0.2, Adblock Plus 0.7 and Real Player.

For whitelisting a site/element simply use "@@" in front of the (anti)filter.

example: @@http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/

(as I do not know what is blocked, it is difficult to tell you what you have to whitelist)

I have't really added much to my filters. And what I did add was very specific.

Scanning the list (of filters) now: nothing will bbc in it explicitly.

So it's one of the more general filters. Or somegthing else. One thing I could do is de-install and re-install (AdBlock+) and see if the default filters have this effect (shutting off the BBC Media Player).

OK my dumbness. For some reason, in addition to the default */ads/*, I had added imply

ad

This was blocking the BBC Media Player.

Still learning.

You've fixed this, but... Uninstalling it wouldn't reset your filters.

Fortunately it is already solved, but a piece of advice for similar cases in the future:

* When you noticed the page was not displayed, if you had opened the page items list (sidebar) you would have seen a list of blocked items in red. Hovering the mouse on each one it appears a tooltip showing the item address, the item class and the filter being applied. So you would have known it was the "ad" filter. For example, add this filter: *aod* which will block the page, and then open the sidebar, you will see what I mean.

EDIT: Additional tip: When you have opened the page items list, if you select a red blocked item and double click it or press enter, it will be opened the preferences window with the blocking filter selected.

* If you want to check which filter is causing problem, instead of reinstalling ABP you should enable/disable filters. The easiest way is to disable external filtersets first - with only a click you can disable all the list. Depending on the results you will check your custom filters enabling/disabling each one, or test the filterset filters by enabling the list again and enabling/disabling individual filters.
