i've notice syntax has change will filters that were made for prior version work with this one?

What "prior version" are you speaking of? Adblock? Adblock Plus 0.5? Adblock Plus 0.6?

Simple filters should be the same, except that if you want a filter to only match the beginning and/or end, you have to put a | at the beginning and/or end of it.

Regular expression filters are exactly the same.

Element hiding filters are different, I think. I don't know if a filter written for one of the old versions still works, or if it has to be changed. I know element hiding filters in ABP 0.7 are more powerful...

It is backwards-compatible with exception of DIV blocking filters from Adblock Plus 0.5 (the corresponding element hiding filters will be somewhat different). It will also automatically import any setting you had in earlier Adblock/Adblock Plus versions.

This doesn't mean that it cannot add new features ;)
