Adblock Plus 0.6 - Development builds

Post by Wladimir Palant »

I'll post latest development builds here whenever I make non-trivial changes. That way people can play around with the changes and test them out before they get released. I would appreciate information about eventual problems, it is easy to overlook something.

If you want to install the build - copy the link and enter it into the address bar manually.

Warning: These builds haven't been fully tested and might not work correctly. Use them at your own risk and make sure to save your filters list.

Information on the latest development build is here: [none, Adblock Plus 0.7 is currently the latest available version]

Adblock Plus 0.6.0.3+

Changes:
- An icon has been added to the toolbar (Firefox only)
- The extension now has an icon
- "Adblock" in the status bar can now be hidden
- Some smaller fixes

Known issues:
- The toolbar button appears to be disabled when added via Customize menu until preferences change
- The toolbar button is somewhat bigger than it should be

Question: should the toolbar button have the same functions as the status bar panel (as it is now) or should it simply be a button to open the sidebar? Right now I tend to the latter - context menu on a toolbar button doesn't fit into Firefox' user interface.

Just my 2 cents & a question, please . . .
1. How is icon moved to the toolbar if you can't use "customize" without disabling it? Never mind - I see your edit now. OK.
2. If toolbar button is there at all it should accomplish same functions as the statusbar button, as mcm's 0.5.11.2 did, w/dropdown.
3. Please bear in mind I'm just "asking;" - I don't use AdBlock buttons at all and instead use Tools/AB options or CTRL-SHIFT-B to open sidebar. That seems faster to me than moving the mouse up to a button on the top of the screen, if indeed that'll be its only function. Also notice the xpi is now 38k . . . . oh oh . . . . say it isn't so, Captain . . .

1. Sorry, fixed the description to make it more clear.
2. Hm, dropdown? Guess I should've looked at what mcm has done :)
3. That's the icons, don't worry :)

Ehm... Well, installed Adblock Plus 0.5.11.2 - the button has no dropdown but a context menu. But the idea is good.

Funny that my first known issue hasn't been solved in 0.5.11.2 either...

OK. Icon looks fine to me both for extension itself and toolbar. Toolbar icon does not have to be resized, it's exactly the same as "Clear Private Data" next to it. But clicking on the button just brings up my filter window (and I guess other options if I click on options - much slower than CTRL-SHIFT-A.

I wish the status bar thingie were up on the toolbar - that mouse gesture "disable" is cool, as well as right click brings up:

options choice
disable for this page only (very nice)
open sidebar.

Left clicking does what the toolbar button does. Opinions will vary greatly on this, but I think the status bar functions moved to toolbar, icon or text button, would be great. By the way, I believe 0.5.11.2 does different stuff depending on left/right click if memory serves. I had it there for posterity, but seldom used it.

Ok, same as before but with a dropdown on the toolbar button:

Adblock Plus 0.6.0.3+

Changes:

- "Adblock" in the status bar can now be hidden
- Some smaller fixes

Known issues:

- The toolbar button is somewhat bigger than it should be

Question: should the default action be changed into "open sidebar" instead of "preferences"?

ok, here's screenshot of my single bar with AB0.6+ and "side arrow," next to the "Clear data" Padlock right side. I have 1280x1024 REZ, so click on thum or else the forum page will be amile wide for some.:

Options get messy, don't they? There are a lot of choices. Any way to have a right-click activate what the drop arrow does?

To answer question re: default action, I'd say the arrow does more than the button itself, and gives you a choice. That's why I asked about right-click. The arrow does it all.

If that's not possible, then probably show/hide sidebar. I open history AND bookmarks sidebar with an AllInOne Mouse Gesture, and like the gesture you have for the status bar icon. If that could be incorporated up top you could certainly "lose the arrow" and have one click for sidebar, right click for options, or mouse gesture for disable.

That's what I'll probably do in the end (it works this way on the back/forward buttons).

As to the question: by "default action" I meant - what should happen when the user clicks the button (not the dropdown) or the status bar panel? Should it still open the Preferences dialog or should it be the sidebar instead?

Enabling/disabling: the toolbar button reacts to middle-clicks. Drag gesture on a button would be a strange thing, I would rather not.

Middle click enables/disables - cool. Need an indicator for that though (graying out?).
You'll need other input - I'd say default button should be sidebar to see what filters are working. The fact that CTRL-SHIFT-B will do it is moot, since people want a button.

Right click: options.

Re: Mouse gesture, good call. You might disable that on status bar as things progress; as you know I didn't find any conflicts with AllInOne and you having that gesture - but someone using another gesture extension might.

OK - I'm headed out of town tomorrow through late Sunday night, so I've just completely uninstalled FX, loaded fresh Branch Build, and "whammo-dragged" my 9 extensions back (including "stock" 0.6.0.3) in and defragged. So I'll be unable to do any more testing til Monday (be happy to then - this is really exciting, at least for me). This has been a very good FX week.

Yesterday I emailed Marc Boullet, author of AllInOne Gestures, to see if he might offer an option for AB 0.6 functions in the next release; I can't speak for him, and I don't think he'd want to start adding specific functions for specific individual extensions, but a generic "open sidebar for other than FX app" might be possible. I do everything with mouse gestures, and have "up-down" open History Sidebar and "down-up" open Bookmark Sidebar. I'd reassign those to AB+ in a second if it were possible! If any extension deserves gesture support, in my view it's this one.

He may contact you Wladimir; I told him to write you directly as it's your business and your call. That would be cool, though.

Because I'm new to Adblock (well I never looked really good at it) I think I am quite capable to say what is the most natural action for new users like me.

Let's say first you made u huge interface improvement compared with the original Adblock!

Improvements I'd like to see mainly concern the button in the status bar and your new button in the toolbar.

I think just clicking on it should enable or disable ad-blocking, like clicking with the middle-button does now (clicking with the middle-button is a good idea, bud it is something that would never come in my mind)

With double-clicking the sidebar should be opened

Give the items in the context menu different names
Open sidebar Ctrl+Shift+B -------Display blockable elements
Preferences Ctrl+Shift+A ---------Preferences
Disable on www.example.com --Display ads on www.example.com
Disable on this page only --------Display ads on this page only
Enable Adblock plus ---------------Disable Adblock plus (if Adblock is already disabled, change in enable)
Options ------------------------------(remove from the context-menu and put in a tab in the Preferences menu)

A modification of the icon. When Adblock is disabled, display an icon for an ad, When Adblock is enabled, display an ad with a red circle. Also add this icon to the status bar instead of text.

I've tested 0.6.1.3+!!! And uninstalled it directly, immediately.
Who the hell would want a cockroach on their toolbar. No more testing for 0.6.x if it has cockroaches.

The double click is impossible, like the right click.

And clicking left to enable/disable is not a good idea I think. By default, adblock is always enable. I prefer a middle click, personnaly.

As you ask Wladimir, I answer that the left click should open/close sidebar, like the History or bookmarks button.

The problem is that you (and we) want to have a quick way to:
-enable/disable sidebar
-enable/disable adblock
-open the "preferences"
-have a contextuel menu

4 things for 3 click, it's impossible in one button, sorry. :/
Then...2 buttons ?

About the statusbar: you know, even if little extensions use statusbar, I think it's not a bad idea personally. More, I hope one day, in the same statusbar, I will be able to see how many items have been blocked...

Maybe, we must use both: One button in toolbar with basics command:
-enable/disable adblock with the left click
-the dropdown for menu

then, in the statusbar, a icon, and near this icon, the number of items blocked. And of course, a good behavior for click.

To summurize:
-a button in toolbar for the beginners, with basics features.
- the statusbar for the advanced users.

About the "clicks" in statusbar:
left click: sorry but I think it should open/close the sidebar (habit...)
middle click: preferences or Sidebar, as you want.
right click: menu (like now) allowing to enable/disable adblock (a hotkey for that should be nice)

Here is my point of view. :-)
