I won't use AdBlock Plus any longer!

Post by Felipe »

I really enjoyed using your program. It was helpful for a while. But i've removed it because I was browsing the web faster with Internet explorer, heaven forbid! I don't want to use IE anymore, 6 years of insecure browsing was enough. I tested several webpages using fasterfox page load timer, and discovered the AdBlock plus was severly restricting the speed that webpages were loaded. Up to 2-3 second per page. My hunch, is that filterset.g had to do with the serious delay. There were just too many filters to have to manage and interpret, and they weren't always working -- pages coming in distorted etc., not to mention (again) the slow speeds I was getting.

Thank you for the great extension, but until browsing speed is not compromised, i'm not going to use this extension.

Regards,
Felipe

any chance ur using the dreaded dialup? well, i guess that could be a cause.. regular expression filters are generally faster than a whole bunch of filters like http://www.adnetwork.com* i see no speed changes decreases with reg ex, and i use a huge lot.. maybe because im using dsl? anyways..

Possibly, the issue is with the scripts used by the sites you're accessing. Often sites connect to an ad site prior to loading the main page. So try using the NoScript extension or otherwise disable scripting before giving up on Ff/Ab+.

Make them available in a FAQ list, or some place people can find them. Filterset.G does indeed slow things down.

This may not be related, but why is the Adblock Plus site using the following site?

collector.deepmetrix.com

I am sorry, but that is considered to be a spy site. I block all of the following in my hosts file:

collector.deepmetrix.com
deepmetrix.com
www.deepmetrix.com
geo.deepmetrix.com

Here is some information on deepmetrix.com:

http://www.download.com/3642-9227-2610705.html
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt
http://tinyurl.com/76doy

It is not a first order spy, but it is enough of a spy that it could be keeping Adblock Plus from being listed on Mozilla's extensions download pages. I hinted earlier at this with a comment about why you weren't on their (Mozilla's) extension page. I wanted to do some more checking before I posted this, but could THIS (deepmetrix.com software) be what was slowing your disaffected ex-user down? If it is, STOP IT! I was getting ready to give Adblock Plus a more serious look. Now I won't. I also won't be back to add any more comments.

Ciao

Thanks for the heads up, hhhobbit. I've added deepmetrix.com to my Adblock list. I don't know why mrbene has that on his site.

Strangely enough http://www.deepmetrix.com/ have same reference. May be an idea to check out what you call spyware before warning rest of the world.

DIV blocking is Adblock Plus 0.5 feature, read this:
http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_features#divblock

Adblock Plus 0.7 has Element hiding feature, and it's more powerful and does not slow you down.

Oh. I mean - oooooh. Just... Oooooooh.

Or, in oher words: Woops!

I just assumed this thread to be new, and thought I had missed its start a few days ago.

Well, there my snappy rebuttal goes completely unheard.

Damn.
