How to block Live TV windows on CNN, NY Times, LA Times

Many newsites have taken to running windows with live television (or live ads) on their main pages. I'd like to know how to block these windows, or at least stop the "liveness" which distracts my eyes and makes it difficult to read at the same time. Can someone help me with this?

On the main http://www.cnn.com it's the Live TV window on the right side, just down from the top. Right now I'm not seeing anything on the NY Times and LA Times web sites. But I often run into this problem on the many news sites I've watched, it's become more prevalent. Right now I'd be happy to stop the CNN one.

A year ago I spent many hours trying the suggestions from the link you referred to, and also suggestions from others. I just tried again(on CNN), the CTL-SHIFT-F, custom filters, and then Add Filter Group. At that point I have no idea what to do. It may be obvious to those who deal with this all the time, but not to me. I added a Filter Group...then what, ADD FILTER? Where do I find this filter, do I create it, copy it...I'm stuck at this point. I don't even know what the definition is of a FILTER, what it includes, how to format it...I could guess but would that help or just waste more time.

It's the huge amount of time spent for nothing that gets to me. I've spend hours and hours right clicking on these concentration destroying blinking flashing moving windows, checking and un-checking sections of the html code. Only once in a while would something work temporarily.

Later...I just refreshed the CNN page and the LIVE TV window is now blank. Perfect! But I didn't do anything. I added an empty Filter Group, and I looked at CTL SHIFT V and scrolled down the list, but nothing else. Now I just looked at CTL SHIFT V again and a lot of the lines on the list are in red text, five are listed as hidden. So what did I do to make this happen? Can someone explain so I can duplicate it next time I need to...

after creating the group, see the right panel of the window: if you don't see a right panel, drag the vertical pointed line to the left and then paste that filter in the right panel (now visible)

I have the right panel where I can add a filter, but as I've already stated, I don't know what filter to add. I don't see any filters, I don't know how to create one. I don't even really know what a filter is in this context. Is there a filter somewhere on the CNN page or in the Live TV window?

it's the filter I wrote in the other topic:

Code: Select all

cnn.com###cnn_pmtvmodule
copy this one and paste it in the right panel

OK...now that I know that the unidentified line (that you offered a year ago) was what's called a "filter", I added it to the appropriate place and POOF!, the LIVE TV window vanished. How exciting...and the next time I see an annoying live window I'll know what to do.

Thanks for the help.

"Watch Live TV" which was blocked by the previously mentioned filter, but not since CNN's update.

I tried adding the filter as shown (exactly the way I added the old filter).

No change.

The "Watch Live TV CNN Go" is in the "right column", down from a black bar labeled "The Latest", on the same line as a similar bar labeled "News and Buzz".

There is also a rotating text "ticker" along the bottom of the page as well.

I'm guessing "view source" is where I could start, trying to figure this out on my own?

UPDATE - Adding "http://data.cnn.com/jsonp/ticker.json" to the filter did block the rotating text ticker.

Also... adding:
http://z.cdn.turner.com/xslo/cvp/assets ... r/2.0.4.0/*
breaks all video, including "Live TV".
