adblock plus works too well! :(

Post by lotusgreen »

on many pages, on like ebay, for example, all images are blocked. this is true for many (though not all) sites.

i checked and there is no filter . but there are some for, well, like there's one that is e .

i love firefox's ability to block images selectively, but the advertisers have all gotten hip to that so it no longer works with them, as you all probably know.

is there a way to use adblock the same way?

i have installed it and uninstalled it several times because i can never seem to figure it out, but i need it! can anyone please help?

thank you

got any sample ebay pages you're having issues with?

thank you fanboy.

any search page. this one: http://search-desc.ebay.com/search/sear ... =&saprchi=, for example
it drives me crazy because that ad at the top takes forever to load, but if it's blocked, so is everything else on the page.

thanks again,

lily

depending if you're using personal filters, or a subscription.. for example here's a list of current subscriptions.

for example a list of my current subscriptions,

honestly, i don't know what i'm using. i went to your webpage and saw your lists, but am not sure i understand them.

some of the items in my list are places i regularly go. some are recognizable as advertisers. i don't remember what i did to get them there, to tell the truth. some of it was a while ago.

and then there's a bunch that make no sense at all.

If you're using a personal list, you'll need to find the filter that's blocking the sites and remove it, or if you're using a subscription.. update, or remove and re-add?

Remove all filters from ABP (make sure you press apply after you've deleted them) and choose a subscription.

You can get a list from

thanks, hubird.

well, again, that was beyond me. but! okay, like so on the ebay search page i listed above-- using the guide you get when you move your cursor to on top of the ABP bug at the bottom of the screen, i deleted the odd-looking filters that it listed, and it now works perfectly!

so there are probably more efficient ways to do this, but this one i understand, and so far so good.

so thanks again fanboy and all; i may be back quickly. and also it seems you can't just do this once, as the advertisers are tricky...

If you pres Ctrl + Shift + A at the same time a preferences window should pop like in the picture below.

Image

This is the screen that you use to manage all your filters. If you are using someone’s subscription (eg: fanboys) you should not need to have many (if any) of your own filters in the list.

What I recommend you do first is delete all of the user created filters. To do this click on the little + symbol beside the Exception rules, Advertisement filters and Element hiding rules headings, this will allow you to see and delete the filters that fall under that category. Don't worry if you don't have all of the headings that you see in my picture just delete what is there (make sure you press the apply button after you have deleted them).

Now you should only have filter subscriptions left. Just to be safe and to make sure any subscriptions you have are up to date you should delete them (don’t worry we will add new ones !!). To delete the subscriptions just click on them and press delete, you do not need to go through and delete the individual items for these (again make sure you press apply after you have deleted them).

You can choose new subscriptions from http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions
