Stupid question -- how is adblock plus supposed to work?

I'm familiar with the junkbuster proxy, which automatically blocks all requests to sites mentioned in its block list (e.g., if adnet.* is in the block list, then if you try to go to any of
www.adnet.com, adnet.net, or
http://adnet.org, the contents of that page will not be displayed). However, Adblock Plus doesn't to work like that. The default filter list has the following (without the quotes): ".adnet.". However, I can go to adnet.com, and I still see the page. I even tried adding adnet.* to the filter list, but that doesn't seem to do anything also.
It's obvious I'm missing something basic here, but can't figure it out (maybe I'm too used to the junkbuster behavior).
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'd like to move away from junkbuster if I can.
Thanks.

I forgot to add -- I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.11 on Win XP, with Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3 (with the default filter list).

The reason nothing is blocked on adnet.com is because ALL the blockable items there do NOT come from adnet.com ... but rather from netincome.com.
In other words, there is nothing to block there with *adnet*

Also note that Adblock Plus from version 0.6 does not do site-blocking, only blocking components of the site. More information
here.
thanks

Thanks for your very helpful replies. The URL you pointed to has exactly the information I needed. In particular, BlockSite is the extension I want...

Adding a filter like: somedomain.com/* will just block all elements from somedomain.com/ so all scripts, images, iframes etc from it would be blocked. All text on the page would be displayed, to block that you would need to add somedomain.com#BODY as a filter, that would stop the page from displaying.
For the site you used in your original post the resources were loaded from another domain, something you can check for any site by opening AdBlock Plus' Blockable Items window.
