Adblock Plus confirmation

Post by Mundo90 »

As a newcomer to Adblock Plus I am stuck on how to continue. On OCT 29 I re-installed Adblock Plus as I was not sure that I had previously done so.V.7.5.3.
Checking Search, there are about 20 or so entries under Adblock Plus. Should there be as many as that ?
Adblock Plus is not listed in the Add/Remove folder. Is this normal for this Program ?
If the installation was successful should there not be an icon in the systray or Quick launch ?
Finally, how do I access and use the program if it IS installed ? These are simple Qs but I seem to be missing something here
I have WindowsME./ SpybotSD AdAware. AVG

Adblock Plus is a Firefox extension. It should only appear in the Firefox "Tools - Add-ons" area. It'll probably be towards the top, since the extensions are listed in alphabetical order.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you need more information.

Windows file search I guess? Cannot tell without knowing what you are searching for. There should be 6 files in your Firefox profile under extensions/{d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d} - that's the extension itself. There are another 6 files in the Firefox profile in the adblockplus subdirectory - that's the data Adblock Plus uses (and backups). If you are looking for files that have the words "Adblock Plus" in them you will find more of course - that's the data Firefox itself uses.

Adblock Plus is installed in Firefox, you should not look for it in Windows. In Firefox you will find it under Tools / Add-ons (here you can disable or uninstall it) or Tools / Adblock Plus - that's the preferences. In general, http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_basics should answer the first questions about using Adblock Plus.

Attn: Wladimir and Mrbene
Thanks for reply. My first reaction is that I have a lot of new terms to learn. "Banner, Wildcards, Element hiding," etc.
Yes, I found the AdblockPlus folder under FF>>Tools>>Addons. [I wrongly thought all programs were listed in Add/Remove folder.]
Accessing FAQ explained a few things but I still do not know just how to use AdblockP to deal with my one Popup. I understand that it would be okay as it seems that I have installed AdblockP, I need Filters. I decided to "Subscribe" to Easy Element + East List. Here I was stalled. When I clicked Subscribe, I got an "Alert" window, "FF doesnt know how to Open the address because the protocol (abp) isnt associated with any program."
Where do I go from here please?

Which Adblock Plus version do you have installed? You can see it under Firefox / Tools / Add-ons.

Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3
I notice,[even on this window ] I have a Adblock icon bottom right. This also appears when that Popup ad appears after I close windows. When the icon is pointed to it states, Status: "Ablock Plus component could not be loaded, maybe it did not install properly."
Does this help to solve my problem ? Mundo90

Yes, it helps somewhat - we know now that your Adblock Plus installation doesn't work, for whatever reasons. I guess installing it again will not change anything?

Wladimir, Although you put the suggestion in the negative, an uninstall and Re-install did work [with some difficulty] It would not respond to "Restart FF"so I re-booted and got ABP back. I had ,a few days ago , un-installed FilterG and added Easy Element+Easy List [so I thought! ]But it evidently did not go through. This time I was able to complete this.
The pesky Ad was listed in the "Add Addresses/Block" window and right now seems to be absent. The damn thing appears after I close all windows so I won't speak too soon ! If it re-appears I will contact you but, for the present, I am learning by degrees. Still dont know what a Wildcard or Rendering engine is ???

Wildcard in Adblock Plus is the star symbol: the filter "http://ad.*/ddd" will block "http://ad.abc/ddd" as well as "http://ad.def/ddd". So the star symbol is means "allow anything here as long as the other parts are still there".

Rendering engine - where did you pick that up? Not in Adblock Plus, so much for sure. You should be better off reading Wikipedia here.
