ABP, the coolest thing since sliced bread

For the longest time I've dealt with just ignoring ads and dealing with them. I really REALLY
REALLY fucking hate ads, and all things related to them. The hate goes so far as even if I do come across an ad thats relevant to my interests, I dont click it, I'll go around the entire stupid thing and get my information related to it seperately. Fuck you Pay Per Click based revenue!
ABP is great, but why shouldnt I have got it sooner? Who knows. I guess it was one of those "dont care enough to bother" things. When I finally did get it, I was surprised. Alot better than I figured it would be. Adding filters is simple as pie, and it has a bunch of nice features. Only until after I got it did I realize via the hits tracker how shitty ad hosts like .doubleclick. are. I'm going to go to town with this addon.
Everyone who develops and maintains ABP and its filter lists needs a pat on the back and a dick suck. But sadly not from me, sorry
Thanks again for this handy addon I should have got alot sooner.

Hey joe,
You are exactly the kind of user made aware of adblockers by the... anti-adblock campaign! (thanks danny)
Adblocking solutions exist roughly since the beginning of web advertising, but they were used mainly by paranoid techies. I personally had a long hosts file, then I've discovered MCM's Adblock Plus 0.5 (the reason to install Firefox in the first place).
I was then among the first users of Wlad's AdblockPlus 0.6+, at the times where a loud group of fans of previous versions were busy bashing it.
Given these, I found sometimes myself very confused while the pro- and anti-adblockers were arguing. They were speaking of screaming ads, content-invading pop-ins, mouseovers - I didn't know what they were talking about. There are years and years since my browsing experience is as it should be. All thanks to Adblock Plus and No Script. Or to the new Opera versions that supports a (not so sofisticated, I must admit) adblocking.
But now the public is more aware that such functionalities exist, and more and more people, out of curiosity, try them and then start asking themselves, exactly like you did: "what the hell? so THIS is how the internet is supposed to look like!! why didn't I know earlier?"

Ah, I've known about them for quite sometime. I also used a HOSTS list, with thousands of entires. One of the main drawbacks is lack of wildcard support, or support outside of simple domain listings. But then again thats not exactly what the HOSTS file is intended for. Now that many browsers by default have a popup blocker, ad companies resort to fucking shit tactics. I doubt Macromedia intended (or maybe they did?) for their Flash model to be used for ads, but man its crazy. Some sites steal upwards of 30% CPU time on my dual core because they have a billion imbedded .swf's that are entirely for ads. It's pathetic really. There isnt a bus big enough to run over all these cocksuckers and their ads.
I think not getting a direct addon to stop these has been simply a result of procrastination. I'm glad I finally did though

I agree, Adblock Plus is absolutely essential!
If I use a PC without it I'm shocked at the flashing crap, streaming video and those abominable floating adverts that obscure what you're trying to read.
Try turning it off now and then to remind yourself how bad things have become
