GOOGLE Sponsored Links

Post by Keith Warner »

Greetings!

My personalized homepage at MyWay used to be ad free. Then a while ago they added a box with 2 "Google Sponsored Links." Not a problem. Adblock Plus removed the content and collapsed the box. Now after re-installing Windows and Firefox with all it's add-ons, Adblock Plus removes the content, but no longer collapses the box.

Last week I added a 1Gb flash stick and installed the PortableApps suite with Firefox, Thunderbird etc. On this version of FF, Adblock Plus neither removes content nor collapses the box.

I believe I'm using the same subscriptions as before, and I've tried both the current and previous version of ABP on both browsers

Any ideas would be appreciated. If I have to live with it, it's a small price to pay for the excellent job ABP does at blocking all the other garbage I used to get.

Thank You!

There is a collapse blocked elements option, maybe it is switched off for you. If that's not it, maybe you had the EasyElement subscription before.

As to PortableApps - I don't see why Adblock Plus shouldn't work there. You see the regular (red) icon? And you have a subscription in your filter list, e.g. EasyList?

I think I just now removed the space that Keith is talking about there.

Were you using both the EasyList AND the EasyElement filters? They are both active on that site.

Well, I've made a little progress. I added EasyElement to both browsers and managed to remove the ad content from the portable. But I'm still unable to collapse the empty boxes. I've checked and un-checked "Collapse blocked elements" several times, reloading the page each time (as I had done previously).

In looking at my other, back-up machine, which I haven't made changes to in ages, the content is removed and the box collapsed without EasyElement installed, and still using 0724.

A real head-scratcher. I'll keep playing with it and let you know if I get lucky.

Thanks for the quick reply, Keith

Can you give a link to the page? Like I said I just NOW collapsed that space. You need to update the EasyList subscription.

Sorry about the mix-up. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't post. I'd switched browsers and didn't have proper log-in yet. By that time the post was 20 min old.

At any rate, here's my homepage:

Thanks, Keith

Looks fine here.

Only the line with the words "Google Sponsored Links" remains (I can tell you how to get rid of that if you want). No ads though ... no spaces with both subscriptions.

SUCCESS!!! Success on both browsers! But I'm still wondering why the box is collapsed on my other machine.

Oh, well, we're on a roll. How do I get rid of the rest?

And thank you very much for the help.

While on the topic of google sponsored links, There is an add-on for firefox called "customize google" which gives you many options including "remove adds". This option should remove any google sponsored links. It does not seem to work on your site but it works to remove the sponsored links from google searches.

That's okay. I ignore them easy enough. What bothered me was having that box pushed my email notifier off the bottom of the screen.
